For the last several days I’ve been wanting oatmeal for breakfast and just haven’t gotten around to doing it. This morning, I did it. I would guess that from start to finish, our process is a bit different from how most people go about fixing themselves a bowl of oatmeal. 🙂
First, I start with the needed amount of whole oats.
Next, I can make “steel cut oats” using the wheat mill. I can barely crack them or I can cut them a bit finer. I can grind them to be flour but that’s not what I want. I prefer them barely cracked so they’re still nutty and chewy after being cooked.
Or I can make rolled oats which are very similar to “Old Fashioned Oats” which you buy in the store.
These cook in about three minutes. Whole oats are rolled using a “flicfloc“.
I often make these when I’m in a hurry but I also sometimes use rolled oats in meatloaf and I love Oatmeal Cake.
Oats are supposed to be pretty healthy – maybe not so much in the Oatmeal Cake! 🙂

I always used rolled oats in meatloaf – it’s the recipe I grew up on so breadcrumbs or anything else just doesn’t give the texture I like. And now you’ve got me hungry for meatloaf – I may have to put that on the weekend menu, especially since that means leftovers for sandwiches next week.

I make meatloaf mostly so I can have meatloaf sandwiches.

We soak our steel cut oats overnight. Then cook them in the morning. Delicious and still cruchy

I cook ours in the pressure cooker. I put the water in the night before, measure out the oats and dump them in. It takes just a few minutes.

Just did mine that way, Shelley. Delish! I also keep rolled oats on hand in case I forget, or to use in baking.

I’d like to try overnight oats but since you put it in the fridge does that mean you eat cold oatmeal for breakfast? Brrrr. Maybe can microwave to heat it

I make overnight steel cut oats in my crock pot, just start it before I go to bed and ready for breakfast in the morning. I follow Alton Browns recipe on Food Network, and vary the dried fruit according to what I have on hand.
