Poor Boots. The vet says he has to go on a diet. He really is an over eater. About three years ago, I had to stop leaving food out for him and just feed him small portions twice a day. The vet said to give him 1/8 cup three times a day til he’s lost enough weight. He weighs over 15 pounds and the vet wants him to weight 12 pounds. When I had him at the vet last year, he was 13 pounds and the vet (a lady vet) said he needed to weigh less than 11 pounds so Boots is lucky . . the vet today was a little more generous with the maximum weight. 🙂
Boots throws up all the time. The vet in Texas told me to put 1 tsp. of olive oil on his food twice a week and that would help with hair ball control – maybe, but it hasn’t stopped the throwing up. Some of y’all told me to raise his food bowl and I did but that also hasn’t helped.
The vet here wants to try a new Rx food although he said the Merrick Back Country food I’ve been giving him is an excellent food. We’ll see how he does with the new food AND with 1/8 cup three times a day. He’s going to think we’re trying to kill him.
Time passes so quickly! The last time I had Boots at the vet other than his annual was over a year ago! It was the beginning of February and that’s when he was being so mean. The vet asked about his behavior and he’s perfectly normal now. The vet said he still feels like there was some kind of feral animal outside that had him all worked up. Whatever it was, I’m glad things seem to be normal now.
We’ll work on getting the weight off . . I want him to be healthy but I hate for him to be hungry.

How does Boots react around Oscar? How about Rita?
judy.blog@gmail.com says
Boots just watches Oscar and if Oscar gets too close, Boots gets to a spot where Oscar can’t reach him. I think Oscar thinks Boots is another stuffed toy that meows instead of squeaking. We’re still letting Oscar and Rita get used to each other through a barricade. Rita has been aggressive with my uncle’s dogs.

Maybe Boots has wormed . My vet says to worm cats about every 3 months.

He didn’t have worms. They always check that on his annual visit. I also think weight loss is a sign of worms and we’re not having that problem.

Our little Coton de Tulear lost quite a bit of weight, and she’s quite slim now….she just went off her food a lot more often, and it happened fairly quickly. The doc checked her over and she’s doing just fine, no problems other than her enlarged heart (it’s been that way since we got her at 5, no change, but she gets heart meds every day). She’s been at her present weight for months now, and for a nearly 13 year old dog she plays more than a puppy and jumps like a cat. Try to look at it that way when he’s giving you the ‘sad eyes’ that say he wants more — he’ll be far happier when he’s slim and trim again. I’m grateful that our dog is slim and her last years will be much healthier for it.

Do you think he might throw up because he eats too much?
judy.blog@gmail.com says
No because several years ago I stopped leaving food out for him and will give him maybe 1/2 cup several times a day. He doesn’t seem to eat too quickly either. We’ll try the Rx food and see how it goes from there.

Does Boots eat his food very quickly? That can cause vomiting in some cats. If he does, maybe try a slow feeder cat bowl for him.
