I should have mentioned this. Someone asked in a comment so here’s the info:
I’m using the 36 count linen that was available for the kit. I didn’t even know what it was so I called the shop and it’s “Raw”. The lady told me it says Raw Natural Linen. I really like it and I’ll admit . . I ordered a bit more so I can stitch the other two pieces on this chart. I’m not sure I’ll do them all on the same fabric but I wanted to have it available if that’s what I choose to do.
I’m using one strand of floss, stitching across two threads.

I usually use 32 ct when i use linen but i wanted to try 40 ct to see why so many people like it, so that’s what I ordered. Tonight i did the top leaves and part of the B pumpkin. I am doing ok with it and can see it when using the magnifier light. It just looks so tiny! Is that why people like it, or is it the challenge of it, or what?
Anyway, its fun to try something different and im enjoying it so far.

I can’t speak for others but for me, it’s (1) great coverage with one strand of floss; (2) for many samplers, a smaller size is preferable.

Thanks for the info Judy! I actually couldn’t remember which linen I chose and I didn’t have the package with me, so I checked the shop’s website and it looks like I ordered 32 count. I think I wanted to start with something a little easier to see and if I get hooked I’ll probably work down to 40 count because I really like how that looks.
