When I did the first blog post about getting a puppy, I told myself . . the readers do not want non-stop puppy posts so don’t talk non-stop about Oscar.
Tuesday when we knew for sure we were getting him, Vince and I walked around and talked about where we would put his crate, we looked at the crates we have here and if we can find a better crate, we’re going to buy a new one. One thing about crates is that he’s a small dog so he doesn’t need a BIG crate but for a dachshund, he’ll be long and turning around needs to be easy so he doesn’t feel crowded.
I can’t remember everything about when Speck was a puppy but we would put a sheet in the dryer and get it warm, then toss it into his crate and he loved going in there at night with a warm sheet. Speck’s crate was in the laundry room, which was right off the breakfast room and it was convenient to toss the sheet in the dryer. Here, Oscar’s crate is going to be in the basement here, which means at bed time, I’ll have to go upstairs, warm the sheet, bring it back down before it cools off. Think I should ask Vince for a dryer in the basement? No! I don’t think that would be a good idea! 🙂
We have some old sheets so I’ll probably cut up a couple of those, hem the edges and have a stack of them so I have clean sheets to put in the dryer at night.
I ordered puppy food from Chewy and it should have been here today but it’s delayed because of weather/road conditions. The lady we’re getting Oscar from is going to bring me a little bag of his current food so I can mix it with my food so I’m going to ask her if she has extra, if she could send me enough for a couple of days.
Today I’m picking up in the family room downstairs so we’ll have a place to play with him, and I’m setting up the fences and blocks to keep him from going under the sofa.
I can’t wait to get him!

I love hearing everything about Oscar! So happy for all of you. Nothing like the love of a puppy and puppy kisses. I got a shih tzu puppy almost a year ago. Her name is Zoey. Can’t imagine my life without her.

How about a microwaveable dog pad? Do they make them?? I have one for my knees, but it has some type of kernels which I’m sure a dog would chew through, but, there must be a chew-proof version.

At least in the puppy stage, we have to have something that’s chew proof. The sheet worked so well for Speck, plus doxies like to burrow so he would get so wrapped up in his sheet. Many days, he was halfway across the room, with the sheet in tow, before he got completely free of it.

“WHEN” is Oscar coming?? I am such an impatient person, the waiting is torture. Towels would also be good to heat for the puppy and they might hold the heat a little longer? Will you make Oscars food, like you do for Rita? Its probably healthier than the store bought stuff. I can’t wait to see him and hear the puppy tales.

I don’t plan on making it. Speck had so many tummy problems after he turned 6 or 7 so that’s when I started making his food. That was 12 years ago. Since Rita came when Speck was still with us, she ate the same food he ate and thrived so I just kept making it for her too but . . it would be so much easier to give them storebought food. We’ll see.

Maybe you can talk vince into one of these instead of a basement dryer https://www.homedepot.com/b/Bath-Bathroom-Accessories-Bathroom-Hardware-Towel-Warmers/N-5yc1vZcfvj.

Darn! Those are expensive. Doubt that’s going to happen but it’s probably as likely as a dryer downstairs.

Judy, why don’t you get an electric heating pad?
You can turn it on and put the sheet on top about an hour before bedtime and then turn everything off and put the sheet in his crate. Sure beats running up and down to the dryer.
judy.blog@gmail.com says
Great idea! I have a big heating pad because I was putting it on Rita’s bed but she chewed through two of them. I still have another “backup” that has never been taken out of the box. I can do that!
Actually, I go upstairs every night to get my water and ice (the fridge downstairs doesn’t have ice or filtered water) but I would have to put the sheet in the dryer, wait for it to get warm or go back and get it, plus it has to take less electricity to use the heating pad for a few minutes.
So thankful you shared that idea.

Congratulations on Oscar, I have a 9mo old toy Aussie. There’s always something exciting going on with her.
I follow a blog 5C’sQue Pasa they have 2 dachshunds siblings about a year old. They live on beach in Mexico in winter and the blog is all about the dogs with mostly pictures, playing, running on beach with waves. Really cute.

My cats had pet bed heaters…just plug in, it’s very low wattage and heat…just place bedding on top of it. The first ones we had lasted over 12 years.

We had them for Rita and she chewed through two of them in about 4 months. A puppy would be worse so we’ll have to come up with a different plan.

…Does Addie know Oscar is coming to live with you? She’s going to be over the moon thrilled as I know you are.
judy.blog@gmail.com says
No. We’re going to surprise her.

We have 3 doxies and each are so different. One likes under the cover, one wants to cuddle on top of covers as close as she can get to you, the third wants on top of cover and stretch out as far as his little body will let him. I can’t wait for you to introduce Oscar to us. I have been telling my husband about you getting him.
judy.blog@gmail.com says
I’ve had three and all three liked to snuggle up right by me with their head facing my feet. This one is not going to sleep with us (at least not the first night!). 🙂

I want to hear “Puppy Tails/Tales”. Keep them coming. Dachshunds are my favourite. I have 7 Little Hounds from Hell here now. Love them.

My older boy doxie was insistant he was going to sleep with me and got up way too early. So he does sleep with me. The one year old younger one sleeps in her kennel as she will not sleep or be still on the bed. I put a dog blanket on the floor at my feet and she would go to sleep there. Then I picked up her blanket and all and put her in the kennel. She now just get put into the knennel when I am ready for her to sleep. She is very good about it.
