We just did something I said I would never do – we bought a frost free big freezer. I’ve always said I would never buy a big freezer that was not manual defrost. There are pros and there are cons to both and my main reason for not buying frost free may simply be that my grandparents and my parents would never buy frost free but . . my grandparents would never buy a car with a radio and that didn’t quite carry over to my thinking. 🙂
In Texas, we had three freezers and decided we would never need more than two and with freezers hard to come by, we sold one of ours to someone who was desperate for a freezer.
We’ve been here almost a year and two freezers meant always shuffling something around to make room for something we wanted to add.
Just before we had the floors redone, I took out several roasts and about 15 pounds of ground beef and canned it. Vince said “You don’t need to do that! Let’s just buy another freezer.” Honestly, I feel much better having things canned instead of in the freezer. Food in jars isn’t dependent on having electricity to keep it safe! Also, if I decide not to cook what’s on my menu for today or if someone calls and says “we’re coming to your house for dinner”, I can open a quart of home canned roast beef or spaghetti sauce, or chicken, heat it up and not have to wait for something to defrost and then get cooked.
But, the truth is, the way we live, we did need a third freezer. When meat is on sale at the local meat store, we would buy 25 pounds of ground beef or 10 roasts. In today’s circumstances, being able to stock up when the price is reduced is important.
Also, one of our freezers is 20 years old and has had some rough moves. There’s a hole in one side of it that Vince has taped over so it probably isn’t going to last a whole lot longer. Doesn’t hurt to have a backup freezer, though I know if we had a dozen, they’d all be full and when one goes out, we’ll be scurrying around trying to figure out what to with all the “stuff”.
Finding any kind of freezer is not easy but we found one and it was frost free. I grimaced and said “fine”.
It was scheduled to be delivered today between 10 and noon. About 8 a.m., the guys called and said “We’re 5 minutes away”. They were trying to get ahead of the snow and ice we’re supposed to get. That, in and of itself, was pretty amazing. I fully expected them to call and say they weren’t coming because of the anticipated weather . . that’s probably what I would have done. But, they showed up earlier than expected, were very nice, got it all installed. They said they had 10 more appliances to get delivered in our area, then head back to Springfield. I hope they get it all done and get home before the bad weather starts.
This is the point where I always say “I’m going to keep it neat and organized . . that never happens!
I’m thankful for the delivery folks who got here early and got it delivered because not long after they left the sleet started. It’s going to get bad out there today and for us, it’s going to be better than for a lot of folks.

Your new freezer looks amazing! I try to keep our freezer organized, and I do a pretty good job of it. However I don’t have nearly the amount of things to freeze that you do.
We are expecting another winter storm here in northeastern Ohio. I am tired of this – – the storms have been brutal this winter and we are getting older!
Tomorrow I am supposed to drive for two hours to my daughter‘s house to see one of my granddaughters in a play. I’m watching the weather closely as I will not drive in ice. This weekend my two daughters are taking me to Florida to spend two days in Epcot. This trip was originally planned for my birthday two years ago, I turned 70. So I’m just saying I’m 70 again this year!
Have fun getting your new freezer set up!

I need to sort out and re-arrange my freezer. I bought things when they were available over the last couple of years, and I’ve lost track of what all I have. I’ve been in “there’s an available hole, stick it there” mode for a while instead of putting like things together as much as possible. I just can’t keep the freezer well organized!
