I was reading the blog post where I mentioned assisted living, and Rebecca’s comment to Vince this morning. I think the idea of having everything you own in one room kinda sprang into Vince’s head when we moved down into the basement. One day he said “This is more room than we would have if we lived in assisted living” and I jokingly said “I wonder where they would put my longarm . . and my tubs and tubs of yarn”.
Just thinking about it makes me want to get busy and use everything while I can. Just not enough hours in my day to do all I want to do.
It is a sobering thought. And, it’s a thought that never entered our minds 20 years ago. I do think/hope he’s kinda mixing up old folks homes and assisted living facilities. Surely you get a bit more room in assisted living but I guess every square inch probably comes with a price.
Speaking of every square inch . . we got our insurance renewal bills today for some of our insurance. Talk about a price jump. Our lowest cost policy went from $400 to nearly $600. I’m kinda nervous to see our homeowner’s insurance bill. I’ve heard they’re going up quite a bit due to the cost of rebuilding. I can understand that.
I was telling Vince and he said “At least in assisted living, we wouldn’t have to pay that!” Oh, I’m sure we pay it . . we may not see it listed as “insurance” but someone has to pay it and I’m sure their bill is more than ours.
I’m not terribly concerned but Vince retired four years ago. We had a plan as far as the budget. Groceries, utilities, gas – everything has gone up. I think he used a figure for inflation but we’ve gone over that. I told him – at least I’m not driving back and forth to Missouri and maintaining an apartment or staying in a hotel. I don’t think that savings adequately covers the costs we have now that we didn’t have in Texas (water, internet and state income tax) but we’re here and whatever the cost, it is so worth it to me.

My father lived in assisted living for a while. It was like an efficiency apartment. One large room with a medium sized closet, bathroom and a tiny bar type space with a tiny refrigerator and microwave. (Meals were in the dining room) The living space was kind of L-shaped. The bed was in the top of the “L”, and there was room for a love-seat and a couple of chairs at the bottom of the “L”. There was also space for a small desk that he used for drawing and other small art projects. There were some two-bedroom rooms available, and the living room was a bit larger in those. I think a married couple would need the two-bedroom, and it would be more expensive.

Thanks. I was kinda thinking there was some arrangement like that. I hope we’re a long time from having to deal with that but it’s nice to know we’ll have a little bit of space.

If your thinking that way, best put the cabin on the back burner.
