We’ve found a cabin and about 80 acres. On one hand, we want it but on the other hand, I feel like we’re past the point in our lives to be doing something like this. It wouldn’t be a full time residence. We’ve spent a lot of time of the past two days discussing pros and cons.
Power lines do go to the property but the cabin has never been hooked up. The current owners are willing to have it all hooked up to the grid. If they do, then it would still have full back up power from the solar panels/generator.
There are two big negatives. The first being that no matter where we fine a farm/secluded type place, it’s going to be broken into. That’s just a fact of life these days. No amount of security is going to stop someone from going in when we aren’t there. Second, it doesn’t have a well. Well water is easy to get there but without the benefit of having the well already punched and operating, we can’t have the water tested to be sure it’s safe.
It’s a place where we could plant fruit trees and a garden. There’s already a shop building there so Vince could have a “man cave”.
It’s closer to Chad, though property south of us (farther from Chad) is prettier. It doesn’t have a storm shelter or a basement so we’d have to watch the weather and not go if there was a chance of tornadoes. It’s a small cabin so I told Vince I would like to have a building similar to his current shop built so Chad, Nicole and Addie would have their own place to stay and they could bring their dogs. I think they would love coming there.
Land is hard to find. It sells quickly. There’s not a lot of time to think things over once you find something. Right now, I say no . . this isn’t the place for us but after we see it, we may change our minds.
Decisions, decisions! 🙂

I can only say, I’m so grateful we bought our cabin when we were 42 years old. Looking back on all the work we did, I’m not sure I’m up for it at 60yo.
Best of luck making this decision!

Oh my!! Good luck!! This was a dream of my husband’s but as we’ve gotten older we kind of feel like that time has passed us by. I’m 64, my husband 63 and I think at this point I want to travel to go visit family and putter around. Having a place in the woods sounds great for part time visiting but not if we had to do the work to get it to that state. I’m excited for you though!

I think you just described my ideal place! Yes, places are super crazy and sell fast. I’ve been looking seriously the last few years.

Sounds nice but as you get older more work is not what you want. You want to visit friends, family and do some traveling. But know you will make the right decision for you both.

Judy I’m just giving you my experience of having 2 homes. we had our place in town and a place about 45 minutes away on the river. When we younger it was great. After about 20 years it wasn’t as much fun and we had some family illness that required me being in town to take care of them. That meant my husband would go on the weekend and take care of the place and do maintenance by himself. All of a sudden it was another chore instead of enjoyment. Plus maintaining 2 places was draining our joy. It sounds so good when you’re not doing the work. You think about relaxing without thinking about the care and time it takes to clean and care for 2 houses and property. Whatever decision you make I hope it works out well for you just think about the work and expense as well as the fun would be my advice..
