Boots has decided the sun room is where he will hang out. The only problem with that plan is that there’s no way to get to the sun room without going through the kitchen and cats are NOT allowed in the kitchen. I’m so afraid he’ll get on the counter and swish his tail near the gas stove and catch himself and the whole house on fire.
It’s simple enough to go put him in the sewing room while the stove is going but he was not happy the past few days because the stove was going almost non-stop with the canning so he was stuck in the sewing room.
When he does come upstairs, he will sit with us a while, almost like he’s biding his time . . feeling obligated so sit on my lap for a while, then Vince’s lap, then he goes to the sun room door and meows til we let him in there. We’re going to have to come up with a better place for him to sit and look out the window in there. Right now, we have a chest that normally goes in the foyer and he sits on that and looks out but we’ll put that back where it goes once the floors are done.
He’s such a good cat . . as far as cats go.

…Years ago when we lived in Eufaula, AL, our house was on the back water of the lake. The back yard was pretty heavily wooded. It was a 2 story with the kitchen on the upper level.
We had an orange cat named Peterbilt with a long, fluffy tail. He came in one night when I had the stove on. He hopped up there and of course caught his tail on fire. He ran for the doors and we opened them for him. He flew off the second floor deck like a comet into the night.
He was fine (fire went out and he didn’t get burned) and after we got over the shock and worry we laughed until we cried.

I’m so afraid Boots will get up there and if I’m not right there watching him, he’ll not only hurt himself but catch the house on fire. What if you hadn’t been there to let the door out or what if he ran under the sofa, or under the pile of cross stitching by the chair and caught all that on fire! Too scary for me to risk it.

I’ve had indoor cats for 50 years and never had a cat go near the stove. I also have propane heaters and the cats don’t get closer than about 18 inches. They are pretty smart.

It can and does happen. I’ve heard of it happening more than once.
