Today was almost all about the fridge. I’m not complaining. I am thrilled with the new fridge. Thrilled with the guys who did the installation. Yes, they checked and double checked everything with Vince watching and there were no leaks. I wasn’t about to call and reschedule the delivery but I felt bad all day and several times, I thought . . I’m going to curl up in bed under a quilt or two and sleep til I feel better but that never happened.
I started this post probably about 1:00 p.m.
The only thing we didn’t measure is the spot where the old kitchen fridge replaces the Jeremy fridge. There are built in shelves all down the wall next to that spot on one side and concrete steps that are part of the foundation and cannot be moved on the other side. At first, they said it wouldn’t fit but kept measuring and then said “The fridge is going to probably get scratched putting it in there but we think we can do it.” The fridge is 18 years old has a few dings already so we said “do it”. We could have moved the Texas fridge there and put the bigger fridge where it is but the Texas fridge doesn’t have an ice maker and the old kitchen fridge does and there’s a hookup for it so . . we went ahead and squeezed it in. We also didn’t think about it sticking out farther into the garage because it’s a bigger fridge but Vince’s car is short enough that we can still get it in the garage and have room to walk. The problem of having too much stuff.
Installation took way longer than we thought because they two French doors for the fridge and the freezer door had to come off to get it in the house.
Back to the present . . 7:30 p.m.
Well, I’m writing at 7:30 p.m. but this is how the rest of the day went.
I had 5 ice chests in the kitchen and 2 ice chests outside and several bags of things that were ok in the garage not refrigerated for a while.
I had wanted to go by one of the food trucks and get food so when the guys left, right at 2 p.m., Vince said “Let’s go get food!” But, he wanted to go to Boomer’s in Carthage, which meant going inside. I didn’t want to go inside but he assured me we would probably be the only ones in there at 2 p.m. and he was right. Once we got our food, the owner and his wife (I think that’s who they were) fixed plates and sat down across the room from us.
You remember I picked Addie up Friday after school. They were off Monday so she was with us Saturday, Sunday and most of Monday. Vince and I met Nicole halfway Monday afternoon at 4:30 and she took Addie.
On our way to eat BBQ this afternoon, about 2:10, Nicole called and said “You aren’t going to believe this!” They closed the schools there for the rest of the week and she asked if I wanted to come get Addie. Of course, I would come and get her! We got finished eating, came home, I changed cars and drove to their town, picked Addie up, went by their house to get clothes, pillow, all the paraphernalia that a 9 year old must travel with (though George no longer makes the trip).
Got home about 5:30 and faced all those ice chests to be unpacked plus a mountain of dirty dishes from things I had dumped that were in the fridge. I was tired. Addie was hungry. Thank goodness Vince fixed himself a sandwich.
I believe everything is put away. I hope everything is put away because I’m not sure I have the energy to do anything else other than shower and go to bed.
But, here are a couple of pictures. The new fridge seems massive but it’s just a bit larger than the old one . . maybe a fraction of an inch wider and taller. Much bigger and it would not have fit in the hole but we had measured and we knew it should fit. Having the whole top for the fridge makes it look larger but dang, it seems like it’s really huge.
That’s all fridge. The freezer is below. Even though the ice maker takes up some room in the inside of the left door, I love those little shallow shelves. Perfect for holding the bottles that get lost so easily. There’s more in there than I wanted to go in this fridge but by the time I got near the end, I just wanted things put away in the closest spot I could get them and since most of the coolers were in the kitchen, this is where it went. I’ll get it all arranged better another day . . maybe not even tomorrow.
The side by side . . I’m sure someone loves those but as I was putting stuff back in the one in the garage tonight, I was thinking . . this thing has no room! 21 heads of Romaine lettuce takes up a lot of space though. Vince has totally lost the privilege to go grocery shopping alone! 🙂
Last night I made my menu for the next week, filled my cart online but thankfully didn’t push the button because now I have to make changes. Some of the things I was going to cook, there’s no way Addie will eat them. Some of the things she loves, I’m out of. I figured I wouldn’t see her for two weeks so I didn’t have any of the things she likes in the cart. Now I’m going to switch out some of the things on my menu, revise the grocery list . . stitch my one length then go to bed.

I have to ask – what in the heck do you do with 21 heads of romaine?
judy.blog@gmail.com says
Add lettuce to my compost bin? I didn’t buy them . . you’ll have to ask Vince! They’re small heads and I use one whole one for our salads at dinner but (1) 21 heads is not going to last 21 days. They’ll be bad within a week and (2) We don’t eat salads every night! I have no explanation!

You could clean, cut up and vacuum seal the lettuce in jars. My lettuce stays fresher that way.. And I think I got that tip from you re salad in a jar. I also found out that if I prep lettuce and all that type of stuff, I will use it up faster than it just sitting there on the shelf, waiting to be cleaned and cut up.
But still with 21 heads of lettuce, you should make Vince clean and cut everything up as well as make the salads for the next week.

I’ve been making caesar salads. I make the dressing for the week so all I do is cut up a head of Romaine, add croutons and granted Parmesan cheese so there’s no prep work. If I’m making regular salads, I always do it in the jars and vacuum seal them. It’s much easier to do all the prep work at once.

Try the Debbie bags. Most produce lasts 2 if not 3 weeks. https://www.amazon.com/Debbie-Meyer-GreenBags-Reusable-Vegetables/dp/B00I4V1U06
I’ve been washing and reusing 1 set for 3 years now.
judy.blog@gmail.com says
Nope – there’s no need to buy that much stuff. I pick up groceries ever two weeks or so and don’t have any trouble with the produce lasting that long.

Oh your new one is like ours! I love love love it! Totally agree it seems huge. I love mine for all the reasons you list. 🙂
I sure hope you sleep well tonight! Enjoy the week with Addie 🙂

I think I will love it too if I can just keep it from getting so stuffed that I can’t find anything.

Have Vince look for those clear fridge containers at Aldi. I got some a few years ago and they are great to store like items together and it is easy to pull out to get the items at the back. At one point I even had them organized as to breakfast items (the cut up containers of ham, peppers, onions for omelets), lunch fixings (tuna, mayo, relish) and so on. Very easy especially if the refrig is a deep one and it is easy to lose what is in the back.
Heck, you could dedicate a few containers to leftovers – easier to clean up that way!

We actually got some of those and I wasn’t a fan. For them to work, you’d have to put the things back into them after using them and it ended up being more work for me. I think we still have them and I’m thinking it’s probably easier if it’s just one person using them. I do see how they would be beneficial. Here it’s not so much keeping things organized as it is just stuffing too much stuff in the fridge and never taking anything out.

Didn’t Vince help you to put all the food back in the fridges? Under your specific direction, of course. Surely he opens the fridges when he makes his sandwiches. Does he use the romaine lettuce on his sandwiches?
judy.blog@gmail.com says
Does not use the lettuce on his sandwiches. No. I put it all back in. I was tired and didn’t feel good and figured I might be a little grumpy so it was best to work by myself and get it done. We would have been in each other’s way trying to do it together and it took a long time but wasn’t hard work.
Last night Addie walked into the kitchen, saw all the ice chests gone and she said “Granny, I can’t believe you did that all. I don’t think I could have done it!” That gave us a good topic for our late night chats – sometimes you just have to do what has to be done. If you start thinking about how much work it will be, you never get the job done.
While I was putting it all away, she came in a couple of times and wanted me to help her with school work or fix her dinner. I told her . . this cannot wait. Food will ruin. She had a snack in the car on our way home so I knew she was ok to wait a little while before eating. She’s here at least til Saturday so help with the school work could wait.

Wow! That was a long day and a lot of work! I’m sure you’re glad it’s mostly behind you! We’re still waiting on confirmation on our Monday delivery. I asked my husband to take the day off as I want him to be here for this delivery. They will have to come up the back deck through our french doors or remove the doors of the fridge in order to get in our front door. I really don’t know what to say about 21 heads of romaine. Maybe Vince can eat salad for breakfast, lunch, and dinner? 😀
judy.blog@gmail.com says
I’ve totally forgotten what it’s like to have to deal with this kind of stuff by myself. I hope your husband will be there for the delivery. I hate getting involved with things like that and saying “check it again and make sure it’s tight!”
I hope you get your delivery confirmation soon.

Judy, I’m a long time reader but never comment. I am in love, however, with your fridge. Could you tell me again what make/model it is?
judy.blog@gmail.com says
Sent you an email.

I love your new fridge. I have a side by side but there is no way one as big as this could fit in my space! I would love to have one like this but until I win the lottery and can redo my house, the side by side is going to have to work.
judy.blog@gmail.com says
It does seem so much bigger than the side by side but when I leave one side closed and open just one side, I can see how it isn’t nearly as much bigger as it seems with both doors open.
Nelle Coursey says
Isn’t it funny how the mind works! Looking at it like that makes it look huge!
