Vince was digging through stuff today and found this old picture of Speck.
He was just a puppy there. He’s been gone a bit over 4 years and there’s not a day that goes by that something doesn’t happen that I don’t think about him. I still can’t get through writing about him without a few tears. I loved that dog so much.
He was so pretty and, as far as dachshunds go, he was sweet. We sure had some funny Speck stories. Addie had met him a couple of times and when they got their Husky, she insisted on naming him Speck. Now she will say “Why did you name your dog Speck, when that’s our dog’s name?” Hmmm . . I think I should be asking YOU that question!
What I wouldn’t give to have another dog just like him!

That’s so funny of Addie! A smile through the tears.

I remember that your Speck and my Schnitzel were the same age. I, too, loved that dog more than any other I have ever had and still cannot think of him without tears. Schnitzel passed a year before Speck, and it was so comforting to know that Speck was still with you for a while. I hope someday we both have dachshunds that bring us as much joy.

I lost my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Schuster, a little over 3 years ago. He was just 8 and died suddenly of heart failure, as Cavs are prone to do. I have never had as strong a tie to a dog as I had with him. He was the sweetest little boy, and I miss him every day. We still have Winston, a Papillon, and he will be 15 on April 1st, if he’s still here. He has a mass on his lung. He’s a great little guy, but he never was a snuggler like Schuster.

They are all different and they all leave footprints (pawprints) on our heart! I know you miss him. I miss all my pups that have crossed the rainbow bridge. I don’t think I will have another one unless I get a cat. They are so easy to care for and they take care of themselves.

We’ve talked about how much easier a cat is to care for. No going out with a cat during ice and snow. If you’re late getting home, there’s no mess to clean up.

I had a cat, Max, who has been gone 6 years. I still miss him terribly and for a long time, thought I had to have another orange cat, just like Max. Well, it is Max I want! So for now, no pets. They sure do leave a hole in the heart!

I keep thinking the same thing – I NEED another dachshund but then when I looked at them, none measure up to Speck. I know that if I got one, I’d love it dearly but, like you, I think I’m enjoying not having to deal with a dog. Rita is mostly Vince’s dog. She wants him around every minute. She doesn’t mind if I care for her but he’s her favorite – maybe because when she arrived, Speck was still here and he was so much “my dog”. I don’t know . . I just haven’t felt a bond with her like I had with him but I think for now, I’ll stick with Boots and Rita . . unless a special dachshund comes along and know he’s the one.
