Addie says things that make me laugh and she’s being so serious that if I laugh in front of her, she would be highly offended.
Last night she was going to bed and I was talking to her. Since I had an early morning dentist appointment, I wasn’t sure if she would wake up before I got back or not so we had this conversation.
Background: The other day I had to pick up my new glasses at Walmart. I had hoped she and Vince would stay in the car while I ran in and got them but I knew that wasn’t goign to happen. Vince isn’t used to having a child around and I can hardly stay with him in Walmart. He’ll tell me he’s walking around the corner and first thing I know, he’s all the way on the other side of the store and didn’t tell me where he was going and I walk every aisle trying to find him.
Before we went into Walmart, I told them both. “You two stay together! Do not take one step away from each other or you’ll get separated. Vince! Please stick to her like glue!”
Last night . .
Me: Don’t forget I have a dentist appointment in the morning. If you wake up before I get up, Grumps will be here so just do whatever you normally do. I should be back either before you get up or right after you get up but if you need something, he’ll be here.
Addie: What if he isn’t here?
Me: He will not leave the house.
Addie: What if he takes Rita out?
Me: Then he will be in the yard and be back inside in a few minutes.
Addie: What if I’m in the sewing room and someone I don’t know knocks on the sewing room door?
Me: Addie! Stop! He’s going to be in the house. He is not going to leave you.
Addie: But, what if he does?
Me: Do you ever worry about me leaving you while you’re sleeping?
Addie: No. You wouldn’t.
Me: He wouldn’t either.
Addie: Well, just so you know . . he did NOT stick to me like glue in Claire’s. He walked away from me to go to the window so he could use his phone to download a coupon.
Vince had signed up for Claire’s emails so he had a coupon to download so she could get a discount using her giftcard.
It’s so hard not to laugh when she says things, especially with her drama added. But, she was so serious and she was concerned about me leaving her so it would not have been good for me to laugh.
I love being around her as much as I am and hearing all the things she says and getting a bit more insight into how she thinks.

When my niece was about 4 I picked her up from daycare one day. As we were driving I told her we were stopping at my house so I could change out of my work clothes and then we were going to g-ma and papa’s house. When I picked her up she didn’t have her shoes on so I just carried her to the car. She started digging in her bag and I asked what she needed and she said her shoes. I asked why, and she told me she wanted to be able to run fast if someone tried to snatch her out of the car while I was changing clothes. I told her she was coming inside the house with me, so she wouldn’t need them. She relaxed and didn’t say anything more about it. When I told her mom, she laughed and said that Callie had seen on the news that a little girl had been stolen out of her mother’s car and she was very concerned about being left alone in the car. The funny part is I don’t think she was ever left alone in the car, even for the shortest time. But it was something that really concerned her for a while. But I also love that she thought she could out run the bad guy if she was wearing her shoes.

I don’t remember specific conversations but when our older son was very young we called him our little lawyer. We would give him instructions and he would come up with things we specifically didn’t say or exclude so it didn’t count in his mind. Kids come up with the most interesting things!

It is funny how some kids think. Some will take at face value everything you say and others look for loopholes! 🙂

I can understand her feelings. But I understand yours even more! There is too much meanness out there and when caring for a young girl you have to be extremely careful. I know Vince knows that and he would do anything to help her if she needed it. But it is scary for a young girl when she knows you are not there.
