Every time we go to the Vietnamese restaurant here, I order a Taro Root Bubble Tea. Addie insists I call it “boba tea” but I’ll always call it bubble tea. Vince grumbles because he’s usually already paid for the Dr. Pepper, which he never says but I know he thinks I could drink water and save the $2+ and then have a can of Dr. Pepper when we get home. Even with the price increase, they’re about 42 cents per can when I buy them in the 24 pack. We go out to eat so rarely that I don’t think spending $2 for a drink is a big deal. But, I do feel a bit extravagant paying for a bubble tea so I don’t order it except when we go to the Vietnamese restaurant.
I’m a big fan of Nuts.com and the last time I ordered, I saw that they had several powdered tea mixes for making the milk teas and one of them was taro root so I ordered a couple of packages and it’s so good. I usually don’t add the bubbles but I did order the black tapioca pearls. There are directions on the web page but I didn’t see any directions on the bag so I dumped a few of them into our drinks and they were awful. We all sucked one up our straws, munched on it and ran to spit it out. Then we fished them all out with a long handled spoon and threw them away.
Today I looked online and . . they have to be cooked . . for 45 minutes. I will cook them next time (if I use them again) but honestly, they’re fine for special drinks but I don’t need those in my tea.
It isn’t the healthiest of drinks with the non-dairy creamer but it’s delicious and I think I’ve only made it three times in about four months so I’ll still have it for the occasional treat but . . without the bubbles and not terribly often.
