A reader had asked to see the back side to compare it to what the back side looks like when doing the stab method of stitching. I took this picture yesterday morning of the back side of the snowman. Do not judge! I’ll be the first to admit that I’m a sloppy stitcher.
I was doing the horizontal sewing stitch until I got down below the hat. That’s where I started holding my work horizontally and stitching vertically (as shown in the video I posted.)
I’m not sure how much you can tell from the back side but . . there it is . . as requested.

I was worried for awhile about the back side of my stitching until I Googled it and saw various people say it only matters if you’re going to enter it into competition. Since that is never happening to my projects, I don’t worry so much about it anymore.

Most people who enter projects in fairs enter finished projects so the back doesn’t show anyway. I was surprised to hear that they had to be completely finished because I thought the back mattered too but, like quilting I suppose . . at least the local and state fairs here, everything has to be fully finished. And, like you, I’ll never enter anything in competition.

Well that makes sense to have to turn in a completely finished project! I guess I still don’t have to worry…lol

I have had people tell me my backs are so “neat” but I think they look just like yours. I try not to be too messy, but as long as the front looks good, then I am happy. Years ago I would go to a sit and stitch at a local shop and one lady would walk to peoples spot when the got up to look at something and turn their work over to look at the back and it made some people so mad that the shop owner had to tell her to stop. It didn’t bother me but some people where very concerned about how their backs looked. I have too much to worry about to get my fronts looking good that I don’t concentrate too hard on the back.

I think this looks very neat! You do a wonderful job!

Thank you! Interesting that different stitching methods and directions make their own pattern on the back. I think the neatness of the back is more an issue when there are dark threads trailing from one section to another and possibly leaving a shadow on the front.

I think you are right. I don’t bother to look at the back, I do try to keep it neat though. But yours is the neatest I have ever seen. I am with you, who cares what the back looks like! LOL If anyone complains about that then they need to try to do it themselves!! A lot of people do not know how hard and time consuming these things are
