I totally understand that places are short handed though I’m starting to wonder if some of those places aren’t hanging out the “help wanted” sign just as an excuse for poor service and never hiring anyone. I have a couple of friends who have adult children who have applied at place after place . . everything from dishwasher to positions in which they are trained and qualified, and they aren’t getting called back but yet the help wanted signs remain in the businesses where they applied.
Anyway, Friday evening I ordered the oil-less turkey fryer (really more like a propane powered air fryer) from Amazon and it said it would be delivered today (Monday). I doubted it would get here today, though there are Amazon warehouses in our area and if they put it on a truck Saturday, there was a slim chance it would arrive today. I ordered accessories for the fryer at that same time, along with some Mrs. Meyers soap and that did all arrive today.
I checked tracking on the fryer thinking it would arrive tomorrow. NO! It hasn’t even been shipped from Mississippi yet and they’re sending it via USPS. I would about bet my turkey that it isn’t going to be here before Thanksgiving.
I called Amazon. The customer service guy said “There’s been a shipping delay.” I said “As in . . it hasn’t been taken to the post office yet or the post office has it and it’s stuck somewhere?” It hasn’t been taken to the post office yet. Then he went and checked with “someone” who said it is in Tulsa. OK . . then it could get here tomorrow. I said “Is it in Mississipppi because first you said it hadn’t been shipped?” Yes. “Wait, you said it was in Tulsa.” Yes. “When am I getting it?” By 9 p.m. tonight. At that point, I asked to speak to a supervisor and they said it is in Mississippi. It hasn’t been shipped yet. It should arrive tomorrow. USPS . . doubtful!
Vince got online while I was talking to Amazon and he found one for $5 more at Lowe’s. Joplin had one. Carthage had 3 so we cancelled the one at Amazon . . which we really couldn’t cancel because even though it hasn’t been shipped, it should have been shipped so the window for cancellation is closed so we can refuse it when it gets here and we’ll get a refund. Good grief.
We went to Lowe’s and got the fryer, then Vince said “Let’s go get a turkey and try it out.” Wait . . this is Monday. Thursday is Thanksgiving and we’re cooking two turkeys on Thanksgiving but you want to cook another one now? Yep so we went to Walmart and got a fresh turkey and I guess we’ll cook that tomorrow and try out the fryer.
Chad has an electric turkey fryer that uses oil. So do we but ours is packed in a storage building so Chad is bringing his. We bought peanut oil. We’re going to fry one in Chad’s fryer and we’re going to smoke one just long enough to get a bit of smokey flavor and then we’re going to finish it in the fryer.
On our menu for the rest of the week and probably all of next week . . turkey!

Judy, I’m sorry for all the trouble but I do want to say you will love the oil-less turkey fryer. We’ve had one since about 2011 and we love it. You get drippings for gravy. It is the best thing!

Ooh boy turkey noodle soup, turkey pot pie, turkey tetrazzini….I love leftover turkey almost as much as Tday turkey. I am curious to see how the oil less fryer works for you.

Me too. Vince is going to stay home and fry the turkey tomorrow while I run get Addie. I’ll report after we have dinner.

Sounds like our TV fiasco….

I think your TV story is worse than the cooker. This was pretty much over and done today. The post office is going to return it as refused and not even try to deliver it. After that, we’ll get a refund and be done with it. And that is how it is supposed to work. We’ll see.

This is great. You’ll have all of that turkey and share your leftover type recipes. Vince has really good ideas!
judy.blog@gmail.com says
He does. I think I’ll keep him! 🙂

How frustrating! I think I could take the disappointment of a late delivery but having someone flat out lie is maddening! Good that Vince found a local one and looking forward to hearing what you think about it.
judy.blog@gmail.com says
Yes, I can understand late deliveries but the no one actually knowing what’s going on, and acting like they do . . hard to deal with.

We have a propane-fired infrared turkey fryer. It worked really well; the skin was crispy and the turkey was moist.
judy.blog@gmail.com says
That’s what we have so we’re looking forward to trying it.

That is going to be one big lot of turkey, but you have two households to eat the leftovers. =)
judy.blog@gmail.com says
Yes, I figure Chad and Nicole will take some home.

Sounds like lots of leftovers for Turkey Devonshire!! That’s always what I fix the day after Thanksgiving. Never heard of it till I moved to Western PA… from what I’ve been told, it’s definitely a regional dish. Turkey and bacon on a slice of toast, then covered with a Swiss cheese/turkey gravy sauce. Absolutely to die for. I found the recipe probably 10 years ago on the side of a Heinz turkey gravy jar and have made it every year since. Drooling already!
judy.blog@gmail.com says
I haven’t heard of it before either. I’d love it if you’d send me your recipe. I’ll definitely fix that because I’m going to have a lot of leftovers. I’m sure Chad will take some home but Vince is pretty enthralled with his new turkey cooker.

-I looked up a recipe, and this sounds really good! I may have to go get some sourdough. Also, my husband and I can really go through the turkey…may have to also get another breast (at least). This is all going to be worth the oven cleaning that will ensue. Two more days…
