Last night we found lots of good recipes – a lot of Mediterranean dishes. I LOVE the recipes at The Mediterranean Dish. I’ve made them less than I would like because so many of them don’t have meat or meat isn’t the focus but Vince has gone through a bunch of recipes there and printed them. There were some ingredients we didn’t have so this morning Vince wanted to go to Fox Farm, which is almost an oriental type grocery store now . . at one time I think it was similar to a small Whole Foods but I still like it and we shop there pretty often, and he wanted to go to Food 4 Less, which I had been to once when we lived here before. Our doctor recommended both stores for finding the foods used often in the Mediterranean recipes.
Food 4 Less had sweet potatoes for 28 cents a pound!! We bought sweet potatoes at Walmart recently for 78 cents a pound and thought that was a good deal. I put either mashed sweet potatoes or pumpkin puree in Rita’s food so it was nice to get them for that price. I didn’t want to mess with canning a bunch of them but I’m sure I will wish I had done that.
We had been looking for dried garbanza beans and couldn’t find them anywhere in town. Not at Walmart. Not at Fox Farm. Food 4 Less had them but they were $2.50 per pound so we stopped by Target and they had them for .99/pound. That was a great find. It’s so weird because (1) I’m not a Target fan; (2) We rarely go into Target and (3) The Target in Abilene, as I remember, was totally backwards from the Target in Joplin so every time I go into the Target in Joplin (which has been twice now), I feel confused the entire time I’m in there. I think I should go right to get out and I should go left. I think things are going to be here and they’re there. I’m always glad to get out of there. People complain about Walmart self checks .. Target had one cashier and probably 8 self-checks. There are maybe 6 people in line for the real live cashier and we had to wait for a self-check.
As far as I can tell, there is nothing we need as far as groceries til well after Thanksgiving. Raise your hand if you think Vince will be back in town before Monday?

Not sure I understand the self check prospect. I can only handle groceries for so long before I can’t manage. In and out of the cart, in and out of the car at home. Local Walmart tried all self checks and that’s pretty self-defeating. The additional in and out of the basket and also bagging groceries means I will not buy $120 worth of groceries. If there’s no one checking out groceries, I only buy what I absolutely need and go homes, meaning I only spend about one-third in the store. Grocery shopping is taxing for the elderly and if you can’t have a person take my money, then I won’t shop there. I recently moved, so I plan to go back to shopping on-line which means i don’t have to trek around the store and I don’t have to self check. Sorry for the rant, but had to get that off my chest.

I’d rather self-check if I’m buying in person but my preference is online shopping and delivery. I can do it late at night; I can have it all done and be checked out in less time than it takes me to drive to the store. Last night I placed an order around 10 p.m. and it was delivered at 9 this morning. That kind of service is hard to beat.
Some stores have an app where you can scan the products with your phone, then just walk up to one of the registers and check out with your phone without having to take all the groceries out and put them back in. I keep bags in the back of my car so when I do it that way, I just push the cart out to the car, put the groceries in the bags and am done. That’s great because I can bag what goes to the downstairs fridge separately, what goes to the downstairs food storage room separately, what goes into the kitchen separately, etc.
I doubt I’d ever use a cashier over a self check but . . we all like different things.
