If it wasn’t so real, it would almost be funny. The shortages. I heard the other day that there’s a snow plow driver shortage in some area of the north that gets lots of snow and they were talking about how that could impact school and work and I’m sure it will impact groceries and toilet paper getting to the grocery store.
We generally have most everything we need on hand but Chad and I were talking about Thanksgiving and Chad said “Let’s fry a turkey!” We both have the small electric turkey fryers so we decided to get two small turkeys and fry them. At first I couldn’t find anything but turkeys big enough to feed the entire county so I bought some fat hens and figured they would work to fry but then we found small turkeys. That solved everything . . except . . I don’t even keep this injection marinade because we haven’t been doing turkeys but when we do fry turkeys, this is all I’ve ever used.
My parents live in a subdivision where, at one time, the neighbors were all friends and did things together. The guys would get up about 3 a.m. and start frying turkeys. My dad and several friends all had the big turkey fryers that use propane and they’d set up. People in the neighborhood would reserve a time to bring their turkeys down and they’d have four or five turkeys frying at once. That was back 30 years ago. I don’t know when we all started using Tony Chachere’s injection marinade but it’s all I remember ever using.
So, I couldn’t find it here at Walmart or the other grocery store. The Walmart guy said “We’ve always had it before but we couldn’t get it so far this year.” Great! I told Chad . . I can’t find the marinade. He said “Walmart always has it.” Yep . . back before everything was in short supply.
Chad said “It’s ok. We can make our own. It’s just butter and spices.” That works but then I checked Walmart online and they had it so I got enough to do our two turkeys.
We also got the peanut oil, which sometimes it has been hard to find 100% peanut oil. The stores sometimes only have blends but we were able to find the 100% peanut oil so we’re good to go.
I think we have everything else we need for Thanksgiving dinner.

Wow, Judy you are showing us in the UK a different form of cooking what with frying turkeys and sous vide cooking, I’m learning. I Love hearing about your Dad , 30 years ago Community Turkey Cooking . What a lovely memory, thanks for sharing.

There are so many memories buried in my head. Something happens and one pops to the surface and makes me smile. My mom would grind up the leftover turkey and make the most amazing turkey salad. I wish I remember how she made that. The leftover turkey salad was always the best part of Thanksgiving for me.

No canned pumpkin, no Wheat Chex cereal, no caramel bits–this list goes on and on. I am so, so tired of going to the grocery story and not being able to find what I need. Ordered all the missing items on Amazon–I might have paid $5 more total but I would spend that much in gas if not more to go back to a grocery store! My question is–how does Amazon have it and Walmart doesn’t?

Good question. But here, it isn’t just WM that’s out of everything I seem to need. We have a Harps and they’re often out of things too. I can get most things faster ordering online from Sam’s or Walmart than I can Amazon so I check the prices at all three and consider how badly I need things and that’s I decide where to order.
Today I had to run in Walmart for an Rx (our store doesn’t even have a drive thru pharmacy) and everything looked well stocked. I only went down a couple of rows but didn’t see any totally empty shelves but you can bet, if there had been one thing on my list that I needed, they would have been out.

—-I have really noticed the shortages at the large Craft supply box stores. The Christmas/holiday sections are much smaller than in previous years. Things that ship from Asia, like tree lights, are in short supply. Luckily for me, the DMC rack was fully stocked.
