Yesterday afternoon I pulled linen and floss for my Veteran’s Day start.
At the moment, I can’t find the sleeve that the linen was in so I can’t tell you the color but it’s 32 count.
I did a bit of changing on some of the colors.
The Reds:
The called for red is the one on the right – Gentle Arts Old Red Paint.
Going left to right, the colors are:
- Schoolhouse Red (Gentle Arts)
- Buckeye Scarlet (Gentle Arts)
- Merlot (Weeks)
- Old Red Paint (Gentle Arts)
The Blues:
The one on the left, Freedom, is the called for color.
Left to right, the colors are:
- Freedom (Gentle Arts)
- Blue Suede (Weeks)
- Americana (Weeks)
The called for white is DMC white but I’m going to use Classic Colorworks Toasted Marshmallow (and that makes me want a toasted marshmallow). The other two colors, Gentle Arts Endive and Wood Trail . . I’m using those.
Here’s where I need your help. I am not sure which blue I want to use. I’m pretty sure I’ll use the Schoolhouse Red but value your opinion on that also.
The above photo shows Americana for the blue. The photo below shows Blue Suede for the blue.
I think Blue Suede may be a little gray but then maybe Schoolhouse Red is too red. If I’m going to use Schoolhouse Red, Americana is probably a better blue. But, maybe I should stick with Blue Suede and use a different red. I feel like Old Red Paint is too pink. I fact, I think that’s the one I’m using on Eliza, with the pink. I feel like Merlot is a bit burgundy and I feel like Buckeye Scarlet is too bright.
Let’s make it easy for me – of the two blues shown above, leaving the other colors the same, which blue should I use?
Thanks!

The red you picked is to bright with the other colors. I do love a bright red but in this case it jumps out too much

I’m not great on color choices but my eye likes the brighter blue with the red you chose. Funny but when I first looked at the reds you had I thought the called for red was fine until I read how you saw pink. When I went back and looked, sure enough, it’s pinkish and that hadn’t registered with me! I think the red you chose is the best. For the blues, the Americana seems to match the intensity of the red whereas the Blue Suede has the gray. I think either will work but I know you have good color sense and will choose what’s best. I went to the local stitchery shop (Shepherd’s Bush) and couldn’t have been happier with the help I received in reworking the colors on my Veteran’s Day chart. She grabbed colors and we set the chart out and put the floss down and went through each one. She then wrote the substitutions on the chart for me. I ended up buying extra fabric just because…lol I asked if they had the Legacy Linen in 40ct (didn’t think to ask about other counts) and they didn’t. They looked like they have a lot of linen but I am not familiar with all the good brands as I’m still stitching on 18ct Aida. It might be worth a call (801-399-4546 email: bushworks2@aol.com) as they do internet orders. When I get my Russian floss I will take it in and buy the fabric I need for those projects.

Americana blue, hands down. I also picked the Schoolhouse Red right away. I do not think it is too bright. Nice choices!

Schoolhouse Red is perfect – I like the brighter blue but I don’t think you can go wrong with either blue choice.
