Nicole was telling me that the other morning Addie wanted eggs and Nicole was busy and asked her to eat cereal. Addie said “Fine, I can fix my own breakfast!” Nicole said she explained to her what all the buttons and pictures were on the stove, “supervised” Addie cooking her own eggs and now Addie thinks she’s ready for prime time in the kitchen!
I told Nicole . . hand her a stack of cookbooks, a pen and paper for a grocery list and let her take over all the cooking! Honestly Addie would love it, at least for a few days. I can see lots of fish sticks, beanie weenie and mac & cheese in their future.
Chad asked me not long ago . . do you remember when we had beenie weenie, fish sticks and mac & cheese every night? No, dear son, I don’t remember that. I actually doubt that happened. What did happen was that I would sometimes make a pot of beenie weenie, a recipe of mac & cheese and freeze it in small portions. When I was cooking something Vince and I liked but Chad didn’t like . . which was about everything except beenie weenie, fish sticks and mac & cheese, I’d take that out for him, defrost it and heat it up for his meal. He was always welcome to have what we had but if not, his favorites were available.

I received a child’s Betty Crocker Cookbook for Christmas when I was 8. Loved it. I started cooking and shortly I said I was going to cook dinner for our family of 6 one night a week. I planned my menu from that book and added a green salad. As I became a better cook and expanded my skills with the Joy of Cooking and the BH&G cookbook, then from Sunset Magazine, my skills really increased. We were not a family of dessert people. I did bake cookies, cakes and some pies. I have never baked bread, our always came from a French bakery (sourdough) and an Italian bakery – they were insurance clients of my Dad’s. Just like the butcher’s and grocery stores that were clients of my Dad’s. All Italian grocer’s and butcher’s. Heavenly smells that bring back such wonderful memories of childhood!
Etsy may still have the old Betty Crocker Book and Amazon has a bunch of them.

My 8 year old grandson wanted to take home a cooking magazine he saw at my house. I subscribed to Taste of Home for him for his birthday. We have baked a cake together, he makes breakfast and likes to make baked potato soup for dinner. He just told me he’s making a cranberry apple slab pie for Thanksgiving. I made sure my kids knew how to cook, and they do, and I love it.
