Thank you all for researching and sending me links and info. I’ve found puppies from what seem to be reputable breeders near me and some not so near me. We will be very careful with whatever we do.
Vince still has not agreed and may never agree for us to get another dachshund. We’re a team so we both have to say yes. Of course, there are exceptions and mostly those occur when I’m quietly adding floss or linen or charts. It’s a little difficult to sneak in a dachshund but . . you know we take in strays so if one showed up on my doorstep, we couldn’t say no so maybe I need to sneak a pile of cash to someone to find me a puppy and leave him on my porch! 🙂
No, I wouldn’t do that but the thought has crossed my mind.
I’m still a little concerned about having Rita, who is really a high maintenance dog, and adding a puppy. One of my biggest concerns is Rita’s fear of thunder. She goes into a full panic attack when it thunders or when there are fireworks and for some reason, this area has fireworks for everything – hours of fireworks for the homecoming football game, a month of fireworks for the 4th of July and New Years. Seriously . . I thought it would never end. Vince was fed up about Day 3. By about Day 20, I was thinking . . there are advantages to living in a city where this kind of stuff is not allowed but I’m not quite ready for that.
Anyway, I do not want another dog that flips out over thunder. In Texas, it wasn’t so bad because we only had storms a few times a year but here, we have a lot more thunderstorms. I feel bad for her because she truly is scared. I feel bad for us because even in basement, she can still hear thunder . . next door or in far western Oklahoma! Old folks need sleep and we don’t get much sleep on stormy nights. We’ve tried meds, most of which needed to be given half an hour or so before the event; we have a Thundershirt. We’ve tried the things you plug in that emit calming whatever . . nothing has worked.
So, I have a lot to think about . . but til Vince says yes, I don’t need to waste my thoughts but, because y’all gave me some good info, when it is time to think about it, I know where to start.

I understand about the loud noises. Our previous dog Boomer had issues and when we moved here. I couldn’t believe how much the community is into fireworks! Nothing worked for him and we worried that our new dog would be afraid too. He was fine until one time he was outside and someone started with the fireworks and with the smell of them too, well now he’s afraid but he handles it much better. Boomer would just pant, walk around and could never settle down no matter what. Bridger will go to the crate in our bedroom and hang out there if he’s really stressed but his demeanor is much different. It’s hard to know whether or not a puppy will pick up cues from Rita. All I know is that Boomer was never afraid until one time we were on a trip and put him in the kennel and apparently there were thunderstorms in the area while we were gone. After that he was always afraid so was it the other dogs? Was it being away from us? Hard to know but it got worse over the years.

poor babies. Has your vet suggested gabapentin? Our kitties take it whenever we need to take them anywhere. Not a sedative, just calms them.

Thats a tough one. Our Springer Spanielwasnt afraid of the storms or fireworks UNTIL my Dad’s neurotic dog taught him to be. (We were helping to take care of Dad so we k Ives there for Bout a year.) It took awhile, but we finally got him past it. Our last little urchin, Minnie, was terrified. She was practically uncontrollable. We literally had to become a human thundershirt.
