Today is the day our local forecater has been preparing us for all week. Like all weather events, you can only predict what MIGHT happen and we have to take it from there. It could be scary and wild this afternoon – late afternoon into evening. They’re saying storms should start around 3 and could bring tornadoes, hail and high wind.
That throws a monkey wrench into my plans with Addie. I usually take her back late afternoon so I can be home well before dusk when the deer normally come out . . not that there aren’t deer everywhere all the time these days.
Today I’m going to meet Chad halfway at 1 p.m. which cuts off too many hours from my time with her but put us and them back home safely before the storms should arrive.
As always, I’m hoping the weather isn’t as bad as they’re predicting and I understand the weather guys do the best they can and I’m always happy when things aren’t as bad as they’re saying they could be.

Judy, do you have deer whistles on all your vehicles? They hide in the grill work, can’t be heard by humans, and really work. Saved my bacon a few times. The one time we had a brand new car, and hadn’t put them on, my husband was run into by a deer, caved in the driver’s door, quarter paneling, front bumper, windshield. It was a very expensive repair job on a month-old car! Probably Princess Auto and any outomotive place will have them.

They may work sometimes but they aren’t terribly reliable. We do have them on our cars and hit a deer with my car and two with the pickup . . with the whistles.

The only incident we had with a deer…she “flew” out of the ditch onto the center hood of one of the last big Buick Roadmasters. One of the fawns hit the rear quarter panel. It was terrible! My husband said, ‘so much for the deer whistles’. The trooper said, ‘well. the deer haven’t been taught to listen for them!’ We never put them on another vehicle. Our Roadmaster was new too when it happened.

I always feel worse for the deer than I do for our vehicle except the time we hit one with my car and I was about to leave to go to Missouri (from Texas) for Addie’s Christmas program at school and my headlight was broken. The guy at the body shop was able to get another one and somehow get it taped or wired in so I could make the trip. I didn’t want to have to go in a rental car. Also in Texas, I still am not quite sure how it happened but a deer ran out, almost hit Vince’s pickup and somehow turned and hit the mirror but not the rest of the truck. The deer didn’t seem hurt but you never know.
Both in Texas and in MO, I try to never drive at dusk or dawn but even in the middle of the day, they’re still out. Vince and I were going to town the other day and there were 8 of them in someone’s yard right on the side of the road and we always know when we see one, slow down or stop because there may be a whole herd of them coming.
