Did I just fall down another rabbit hole? Maybe. My justification is that Addie will love making candles. We can make one for her teacher and one for her mom for Christmas. And we can make one or two for me!
I don’t want to sound like a commercial since I’ve been frustrated with the youtubes but as a reader commented yesterday, maybe the flosstubers get frustrated with everyone saying “Where did you get that?” or maybe, since they love everything cross stitch, they just want to share. I’ll stop complaining about “commercials” since I feel like I’m sounding like one today.
I do want Addie to learn to love making things and try to expose her to it so I think she’ll enjoy the candle making. She can sign her name on the bottom of the candle and date it.
I ordered a variety of bowls, some small and round, some longer dough bowls, some shorter type dough bowls.
I showed Vince this small one and he said “When I get my lathe set up, I can make those all day!” What he’s really saying is “Don’t buy something I can make” but . . I know if we want to make them for this year, I need to buy them (so I did!). Most any time Vince says he can make something like that, I end up feeling like I’m hounding him because he doesn’t make it and I keep saying “Are you going to make it?” “Can you make it today?” For less than $7 per small bowl, it’s worth it to me to order it. When he does make more, Addie and I can make more candles.
I ordered soy wax – the Etsy shop says its great for beginners or experts. I ordered colored wax chips for coloring candles because I know Addie is going to want to make colored candles. I ordered wicks and fragrance.
Now all I need is for it all to arrive and for Addie to have a weekend between now and Christmas that she can come stay with me and we can make candles.

…Yup, you went down another rabbit hole and you kinda dragged me along. I just ordered some of the dough bowls from two different etsy sites. I’ve been looking at the bowls for a long time and decided to go for it. It will be a different look for Christmas decorations this year!

Those dough bowls are so useful for so many things.

I’ve saved wax from candles used at church for years, and have piles of it here at home. I also got a couple of molds to make a couple different sizes of Christmas Tree candles. Now that I’m not at that church anymore, and have no more candle wax to bring home, I’m not collecting anymore. I still haven’t used any of the wax or candle molds yet, but one of these years….Candlemaking is fun!! 🙂

When I was a Girl Scout leader, we made ice candles and root beer float candles. The girls loved it. Ice candles are made by suspending a wick in a milk carton, filling it with ice cubes, and adding the hot wax adding more as needed. When it hardens pour off the water and gently peel off the carton. Experiment with different sized ice cubes. You’ll have holes in the candle. So cool. For the root beer floats pour brown wax in a root beer glass (bought at a thrift store). After it’s mostly stiff whip up some white wax with a fork or whisk and then pile it on the brown wax. Insert half a straw.

Cute ideas. Thanks!

My brother and I made several ice candles, with quart cartons. They were large! I was thinking of those as I read this post.

I think they’ll be really fun to make and Addie will have fun with them.

You will need to decide which pan you can ruin to melt wax in. I used to use a coffee can in hot water but no longer have any coffee cans. I bent the can a bit to make it easy to pour out. I am sure you could find a pan at the flea market. Wouldn’t Vince just love to find one for you.
