My mail lady saved me today. I knew I had packages arriving. Ten to be exact. Part of the problem is that 123 Stitch may send out five packages for one order if everything isn’t in stock when I order it. Sometimes a package arrives that has one skein of DMC floss in it. I knew that several of the packages were coming from 123 Stitch. I’ve expressed my frustration about that before to Vince so he deos believe it’s real. There was a package from a friend, a package I had pre-ordered, a package with the rick rack I needed to finish Harvest Tina, a package of sticky tac for Addie’s diamond painting. Is that 10? I can’t remember what else it was.
I was so hoping Vince would be in the shop where he doesn’t see the mail lady’s arrival. Nope, he was out push mowing around the edge of the drivewway — so he saw her shoving package after package in the mail box. Apparently, they had this conversation:
Mail Lady: Does Judy cross stitch?
Vinces: Yes.
Mail Lady: I have a question about cross stitching and maybe she can help me some day (she and I have already talked about that).
Vince: You know **** down the road cross stitches too.
Mail Lady: Oh, yes, she orders lots of EXPENSIVE stuff.
Vince came in laughing and said . . you must order cheap stuff (not the word he used) and **** orders nice stuff.
I think instead of complaining about 10 packages, he actually felt bad that I was ordering cheap stuff. I wasn’t but we will let him think it’s all very, very inexpensive! 🙂
One of the things I’d been waiting and waiting for was the Mary Ann Aldred kit. The photo is kinda washed out but it’s lovely! This was a kit through one of the online groups and I got in on the tail end of ordering it so I was in near the last batch to go in the mail.
The kit included the floss, fabric, chart and cute little floss tag decoration (a mini of the chart).
Into the stack of “to be stitched some day” it all goes!

… This is pretty! How is the name stitched? It almost looks like an outline stitch and is so delicate looking. And, would you consider putting your name & completion year instead of the young girl’s?
I noticed that the stitching is not as symmetrical as other samplers, so I guess you have to decide if you will stitch as the chart is written or adjust to “correct” the mistakes. I’m remembering the spacing changes mentioned for “A Changed World” .

It’s called a four sided stitch. No. I’ll stitch it as shown. I may stitch my initials and the year somewhere in there. I’ll probably stitch this one as it’s charted since that’s how the girl stitched it. I dont mind making changes to accommodate what my eye sees as an improvement to new projects but when it’s an antique sampler that’s been reproduced “as is”, I won’t change it most of the time. It’s ok – some will but I’d prefer not to make any changes on this one.

That kit is so pretty! I often wondered what the standard was in regard to making reproductions of old samplers…putting the original name or your name. It makes sense to put in the original name and then include your name or initials somewhere. I had to laugh at Vince’s comment on cheap stuff. I received my order from Colorado Cross Stitcher and had fun looking at the patterns. I too put them away in a someday to be stitched…lol. I was tempted to kit up one of the patterns but I had already kitted up another project that was portable.

I think there’s no right or wrong way – whatever makes the stitcher happy. Some people do make changes. Some change names/initials. There may be a time when I make changes but I won’t on this one.

Hi Judy
Lovvvvvvvveee this one, oh no not another to be saved for another day, though it makes me feel good to know I would have the chart and slowly kit it up.
Qu: Is it wrong to change the original verse in old samplers to put in one of the poems I have collected over the years? What is your thoughts on doing this?
My mail lady says she loves delivering parcels to me as she realizes they are cross stitching supplies, and she has asked if she can come with a beginners kit and maybe i could help. No problem as i said after all these years I’m still learning! I look forward to her visit.

That’s exactly what my mail lady was asking! I will do a blog post today about changing the verse in reproduction charts.

I’m not sure I can count that high! 🙂
