Yesterday the Amish guys came to install gutters on the shop. Any time we can have work done by Amish or Mennonites, we’re happy to do it. They are always right on time, they get the work done quickly and they do a good job and the price is fair.
Vince and I were wondering how Amish guys were going to put our gutters on because . . we didn’t think they’d come riding up in a horse drawn buggy but nothing would surprise us. It ends up they have an enclosed cargo type trailer with all their stuff in it and they have a driver . . a guy in a pickup pulling the trailer. He drops them off, with their trailer and I forgot to ask Vince how the driver knew when to come back and get them. They didn’t have phones. I guess they know how long the job is going to take but Vince hadn’t ordered gutter guards . . and decided to have them add those . . I don’t know the answer but I’ll ask Vince when he comes in.
They don’t have electricity in their homes but the tool that extrudes their gutters is electric so they didn’t mind plugging it in to our electricity. 🙂
They had a big roll of metal and the machine just spit out 40′ of gutter. I didn’t ask Vince if it also made the downspouts. I’m sure it isn’t new technology but I’d never seen it before. It was quick too. They had the first one extruded and the second one almost done before we got out there.
The guys were adamant that Vince get the extenders put on the downspouts SOON because they said it was going to rain “tonight”. Vince asked me if it was going to rain. I used to always look at the weather. Now I just want to know when it’s going to snow! 🙂
He had the extenders so he did get them on so as not to wash away the foundation on the building and, sure enough, it rained last night!
When we went to bed last night, Vince said “We don’t have to leave the house tomorrow (but we do) and no one is coming (but I bet someone will!).
When we opened our bank account last year, they gave us a decent gift card to one of the nicer local restaurants. It expires one year from date of issue and that’s coming up this week. We’re not eating inside restaurants so we’ll call in an order, use our gift card and go pick up the food and hopefully find a place in the house where we can eat! I’m so ready to get things put back together in the kitchen.

At some point in our sons’ youth baseball experiences a conversation on religion came up in the dugout. Majority of the boys were Catholic. Our son said, “we’re Mennonite”. One boy said, ‘you can’t be. Your mom wears pants’! Another boy told him, ‘you come in a car’. Interesting lifestyle conversations for youngsters that had known each other for several years.

Until we moved to Missouri, I had never had much exposure to Mennonites and Amish and was as confused as your sons’ friends. I still don’t know all there is to know, nor do I need to know but, like y’all, the ones we’ve dealt with seem to be some of the best people.
