I am really pretty sure the Lowery stand is the only stand I’ll ever use from now on. I haul the frame upstairs and downstairs. I would imagine that I’ll stitch more upstairs during the winter months and more downstairs during the summer months but even if it’s just a couple of days a week, I doubt hauling the stand upstairs and downstairs is good for it and that probably increases my chances of breaking my neck on the stairs.
Ever since seeing someone else using one, I’ve wanted the extra wide bar that the frame or hoop attach to but they’re so hard to find. I’ve signed up to be notified at several places when they’re back in stock but hadn’t received any notifications and Love Crafts had them in stock so I ordered two of them.
The light that I ordered is actually out of stock right now but Erin, a reader, sent me the link to it at Fat Quarter Shop.
I’m not saying go out and buy this because I’ve thought other lights were the cat’s meow and after using them a few days, decided they weren’t so perfect after all but here’s what I think about this light after using it a few hours last night.
- It is lightweight – extremely lightweight. I found on another site that it weighs 3.3 pounds and it comes with a carrying case so anywhere we go (like we go anywhere!), I could take this light. It clamps onto a table or it fits down into the holes on the light bar that attaches to the Lowery stand (light bar sold separately). See photo above.
- The specs can all be found in the Fat Quarter link but the arm is 28″. That’s one of the things I needed was a longer arm. The magnification is 2.25, which is perfect and the diameter of the light is 3.5″.
- Vince commented that he thought I wanted a bigger light (meaning a bigger glass to look through) but all I need is a light that has enough area for my eye to look through. I can move the light, move the frame, move my head to get to see a bigger area but looking through 3.5″ covers a lot of cross stitching.
Just to help you understand how many positions I can get this light into, look at the photo above and then look at the photo above this one. See the light bar? I have the light in the hole closest to my chair but the light bar is turned away from my chair. If I swivel that light bar towards my chair, the light is in the hole fartherest from me but I can put the light in the other hole and it would be closer to me. I can move that bar towards the back, towards the front . . it moves in a full circle around the pole to which it’s attached.
Even though the lamp is small, you can see on this picture that was taken through the lens, there is no distorted area. The entire area you see is in focus.
The arm bends in two place. It isn’t like a slinky type thing that you can bend everywhere. I can see how, depending on the frame you’re using, you might have a problem getting it exactly where you need it to be but since the Lowery frame moves into so many configurations/positions, I think this little light is close to perfect for using with it.
I’ll report back after having used it for a couple of weeks.
