As I was unpacking a box this morning, I came across several packages of Ball wide mouth lids. One is an older box. I don’t remember how old this is but it’s been a while since Ball used the blue boxes.
On the side of the box is the info to order the 32nd edition of the Ball Blue Book for $3.50, which included postage and handing. I looked up the 32nd edition and what I saw indicates it was produced in 1989. I was canning back then but good grief . . Chad was 2 years old back then. This box of lids has been moved a whole lot of times!
Canning lids prior to 2013 had BPA so I won’t use them for water bath or pressure canning but I feel they’re safe to use to vacuum jars of freeze dried foods since no heat is used and since, so long as the jars are upright, the food isn’t coming in contact with the lid.
Who wouldn’t want to pay $1.22 for a dozen canning lids? The last wide mouth lids I bought were over $3.00.

The cost has gone up a lot this year for lids. Plus they are hard to find. I barely had enough to do my green beans!

Crazy, huh? I always try to buy off season and make sure I have enough for the next year. Same with pectin, pickling spices, Fruit Fresh, etc.

I started using Tattler lids. You can use the lids over and over. There is a bit of a learning curve, but so far so good

I’ve been using them since they came out and I love them but for jars I’m giving away and for vacuum sealing, I always use metal lids. Also, with new jars, I’ll use the ones that came on the jars.

If you buy lids this year they are more than $3. I made the mistake of ordering from Amazon and received counterfeits last year. They do not seal well and who knows what is in them. This year I have been scouring the stores to find lids.
Judy Laquidara says
I had seen complaints about some mail order lids being poor quality. Sorry it happened to you. That’s a lot of wasted time, effort and food to have a poor result with the seals.

I got some of those counterfeits too. Kept trying to deal with the seller on return & refund. He kept trying to get me to order more and kept dickering on how much he would refund. Finally I just filed a complaint with Amazon & got my money back in 2 days. Then I threw 8 dozen lids in the trash. I certainly didn’t want to stick anyone else with those things.
Judy Laquidara says
That is so ridiculous. Why do people sell junk like that??
