Yesterday I kept thinking I had a frame that would fit Rooster but I never stopped to check the frame stash. I had a frame I thought might work for the last redwork piece I stitched but it was too small. Since Rooster is smaller than that piece, I was hoping it would work.
This morning as soon as I got up, I remembered to get it out and check. This is the frame I ordered for Big Red House but ended up using a Goodwill frame. That reminds me . . I’d like to make a Goodwill run and check out the frames but that’s not happening any time soon.
That’s just the frame positioned over the piece and sitting on the sofa but I think it works great. The only question I have is do I want something more plain for this piece. That frame may be a little more ornate than what I would have chosen for Rooster so I’m going to think about it for a while.
Probably I’ll look at some of the pieces I want to stitch in the near future and see if I think this frame works better for something else.
I wouldn’t be unhappy with Rooster in this frame but I guess it’s kinda like my other stashes . . if I use it for Rooster, I won’t have it for something else.
For now, I’m going to keep this frame in mind, stick Rooster on what used to be the quilt design wall but is now the “waiting to be framed” wall. I’ll read your comments and think about it a while. It’s a small piece and a frame this size isn’t expensive so it isn’t like I have an expensive frame that I need to use instead of ordering a new one.
When I’m ready to order frames again, I’ll see what’s available and see if there’s anything else that seems like a better fit or . . if y’all say “this is THE frame for that piece”, then I’ll use this one!

Where did you get that frame. It is beautiful

This is where I order all my frames, except for the ones I find at Goodwill or the flea markets. https://www.customframesolutions.com/

I like the rooster in that frame because the rooster is kinda fancy, the roping border reminds me of a fence, and the reddish tone of the frame emphasizes the redwork. At least on my monitor, the color of the frame seems to accent the redwork.
The questions I have … Is the opening of the frame a standard size (ie 8 x 12) so that if you prep the cross stitch to be framed, you could then substitute the frame if you found something else? A frame does not have to be a “forever” thing. We all switch out family photos from “standard” frames.
Second, where are you putting this piece and will the frame fit into the grouping or would a simpler frame look better in the grouping?
Third, when are you making a Hobby Lobby run and do they have the frame shop at your location? You can always take the redwork to HL and look at simpler frame and color options. Or, does that custom frame website let you put a photo/size of your work in an app and then let you pick out some frames to test?
Good luck!

Frame it up and enjoy. When you decide in the future this frame better suits a new finished stitchery, you can remove this and order then 🙂 Best of both worlds!

IMHO – it is a beautiful, rich-looking frame, but I think it overpowers the piece. I’d look for something a little smaller and a little plainer. As I look at the colors, I kinda think the reds fight each other, but that might not be true in reality.
Sarah F. says
I agree with Marcie. When I first saw the picture the color on the cross stitch pieced looked faded.
Cherie Moore says
I too, agree with Marcie. Perhaps IRL it doesn’t wash out the rooster but on the computer it does.
Julie Thomas says
I also agree. I love this piece but it is simple with just one color. I would pick a less ornate frame. I want to stitch this one also but I have the same issue as you. I seem to order more than I can do! lol
Theresa says
I agree with Marcie, too. I see the frame more than the rooster.

I think the frame overpowers the simplicity of the piece. It might look different in a grouping on a wall. This is only my opinion, do what makes you happy, you stitched it and it will hang in your home.
Dottie Newkirk says
I guess I’m in the minority – I REALLY like that frame with the rooster ;-).
April Reeves says
I think a more simplistic and rustic frame would work better for Mr. Rooster. Any chance you gave him a name while stitching?
Chris says
I like it! It will look even better when it fitted into the opening and the shadows are gone.
Teri says
I also think it over powers the picture
Nelle Coursey says
I really like it in this frame. I think you should go ahead and frame this. If you find a frame later on that you like better or think will look better, then you can change it out. I agree with the person who said they change out frames often. I frame all of Pat’s photography and mine as well. I think you should do it. The reds look good together.
Judy Laquidara says
The frames I order are all ordered for the specific project and there’s no uniform size so change them out would mean re-lacing on a new piece of foamcore so once they’re framed, that’s probably a permanent job.
Barbara Yarnell says
It looks perfect to me!
Elizabeth Streeter says
I like it I think it makes the rooster more regal
D. Kummelman says
I like it!
Laura Haynes says
I am not an artist/creative. I would probably choose something either half the width of this frame, or the width of the black roping section.
