It’s so nice when people show up like they say they will . . rare but nice.
Before 9 a.m. and the internet people have been here, figured out a problem with our internet, fixed that and ordered a new line to be installed that will make it even better. We already went from 35 mbps to around 300 mbps. Jeremy and Angie mostly stayed in the basement so they had the internet set up in what is now the sewing room but that’s the fartherest room from the upstairs family room where we mostly sit so they moved all the “guts” of the internet out to the downstairs family room, which is just at the bottom of the stairs from the upstairs family room so we no longer need to use the extender. Vince will take the extender to his shop so he can have internet out there.
The electricians just drove up. Soon he’ll have electricity to the shop. Life is good! 🙂
I asked Vince . . will you get the guy to come in and tell me that he can put an outlet on the end of the cabinet where I want it? Vince said “Judy! You can put an electric outlet anywhere you want it!”
But . . that’s not quite true. Because of where the dishwasher is, I can’t have the plug where I wanted it unless I want the back side of an electrical box to show underneath the bar and I do not want that. With the bar high, when sitting in the family room, I can see underneath it and don’t want to see the back side of an electric box. Darn it.
I’ll come up with another plan but I’m not putting much thought into it til I see the estimate for lowering the bar. Vince said “We can have the cabinet maker built a panel that sticks out a bit farther . . ” No. Some things just aren’t worth the cost. I’m very lucky and blessed to have what I have and I’ll love my kitchen and my house whether I get another electric plug or not.
Here’s something kinda funny. There’s a GF outlet not far above the sink. I’ve never been able to get a plug in it. It’s like it’s blocked or something so I asked him to look at it. No . . not blocked. It’s to keep a kid from poking a fork or something in it. Really? All the electric plugs at little kid level in the rest of the house, including one right by the toilet, and the one that I can barely reach because it’s behind and above the sink and they make that one kid proof?? You have to put the plug in exactly straight, with both prongs going in perfectly straight and you have to push really hard. I wanted to say . . we have no kids . . can we get rid of that “safety feature”? I didn’t . . I’ll just be sure to use all my might and poke the plug in perfectly straight with the same amount of force on both sides of the plug. I’m sure everyone else has encountered those type plugs but I have not so I learned something new today!

I hate those plugs, too!! They are as difficult to take back out as they are to plug in!! I generally end up smacking myself while unplugging it, so I’ve learned to stand off to the side or far enough away… All these new-fangled “safety” devices are more like”old-people-resistant” devices. Annoying!

I didn’t think about unplugging it since I’ve never been able to poke anything in there. Thanks for telling me that.

When we had the kitchen redone before we moved in, apparently a lot of requirements changed. So instead of 2 or 3 outlets in the kitchen, we have 6 of them. Six. Six outlets. For 2 of us to use. So 12 places to plug things in. We have 3 things that are always plugged in. It is ridiculous. (And yet when we redid the bathroom there were no requirements on how many outlets had to be in there and so we just have the original one!) But now you are making me wonder if you have not identified why some are so difficult to plug things into….altho not all of them!
Judy Laquidara says
We probably have at last a dozen outlets in the kitchen so 24 places to plug things in and all I need is ONE more. 🙂
The crazy thing is that they’re all along two walls but where the sink is and the bar is about 80″ long, there’s ONE plug and it’s behind the sink.
In the bathroom, there’s even one right by the toilet! There are four double outlets in our closet. We aren’t short on outlets anywhere except that one spot where I’d like to have one in the kitchen, and, of course, it seems to be the most troublesome spot to put one. When/If the new dishwasher arrives, Vince will take pictures while the old one is out and send that to the electrician.

We have some of those plugs too and I really don’t like them! I always feel like I’m going to break something just to put a plug in!
Judy Laquidara says
At least I’m not the only one who has them! 🙂

The one by the toilet is so you can add a bidet seat. Now that is one I would like to have and have been thinking about calling an electrician to add it. It would have been wonderful to have when I had my shoulder replaced. I have only one plug-in in the bathroom. We also have those stupid plug-ins in the kitchen that are so hard to plug in.
I will bet that the electrical wire could actually be run behind the draws in the cabinet. Probably down at the bottom and then up where you want it. As long as it is stapled down well so the draw couldn’t hit it. I have seen them come out the side of center islands and bars before.

I think it was more for charging the cell phone while sitting on the toilet because it’s not THAT close to the toilet. I think if it was for a bidet seat, it would be closer to the toilet but I never asked.
There are no drawers – just the dishwasher and there’s not room between the dishwasher and the cabinet exterior to put the box for the outlet. I’ve had outlets on center islands but with the dishwasher there and taking up the entire space, it isn’t going to be easy. When the guy left, he said “Don’t worry . . I’ll come up with something” so I hope he will.

I hadn’t thought about fancy toilet seats (bidet, warm) needing an outlet. What a world.
We have SO MANY outlets in the kitchen (I just counted: five within (nearly) reach of the sink, two more farther down, and two in the island. I don’t think there’s counter space to have something in every outlet, but it is nice to have plenty. Now the bathroom…it had one outlet, in the corner by the sink! There are a few inches to the side of the sink, enough for an electric razor, but not enough for a hair dryer. We added an outlet to the other end of the counter right quick. Odd imbalance.

That’s why some of ours are so hard to get the plugs into the outlets? I thought I was just weak! When we had our knob and tube wiring replaced in the house I asked them to put an outlet above the one counter in the kitchen that doesn’t have cabinets over it. There were outlets under all the counters, but not in that spot, where it would be most useful! That’s where i plug in the bread machine, rice cooker, instant pot or whatever steamy appliance I choose to use. I hate having to pull an appliance closer to the front of the counter to avoid the cabinets!
Judy Laquidara says
That’s exactly how I feel. I bet that is why some of your outlets are hard to plug in. I never used that outlet because I thought it was broken. Now I know I just have to put a little more effort into plugging something in there.
