Chad loves cast iron and is always on the lookout for pieces he doesn’t have. This afternoon our neighbors were over and Vince and I were talking to them. I had my phone with me and Chad called. He said he sent me a picture and had some questions . . could I call him back when I wasn’t busy.
He found this old Magnalite roaster at an auction today and he wanted to know if I knew anything about it. Yes . . as a matter of fact, I do! Magnalite is used a lot in cajun country. I used to have a lot of it but that got left behind in a divorce.
Most of the pieces I have now are Cajun Classic. You can read a bit about them here. It was funny because when Chad asked if I was familiar with these pots, I sent him a picture of the one I used to roast the ribs so I sent him a picture.
It’s hard for me to impress Chad but I might have done it today . . or at least surprised him.

Wow impressive pots, never heard of them before I’ll have to look them up.

I had never heard of them (being raised in the San Francisco Bay Area) until I met my MIL. Born and raised in Okla. Her cookware was all Magnalite. My grandfather on my mom’s side was President of a steel company. She had all wonderful stainless pots and flatware. The Magnalite was all gone by the time she (my MIL) died. I would liked to have had some of it.
Good for Chad and also that you still have some of it!

Weirdest coincidence, I watched a youtube video of a couple that were resellers and they found Magnalite roasters for cheap and resold them at a huge profit. The very NEXT day, I saw 2 on FB marketplace for $5 each. I snapped them up and my husband picked them up the next day. Haven’t cooked in them yet, but will once the weather cools off and I can turn my oven on without feeling guilty that I have the AC on at the same time.

Lucky you. I’m going to pass that story on to Chad.

Oh, I would love one of those roasters! All of my cookware is Magnalite. My mother used it and when I got married, that’s what I wanted. It’s going strong, 36 years later. I have one pot that was my grandmother’s and she had it for a very long time. I’ll have to look around flea markets (not that there are many around here) to see if I can find one!
Judy Laquidara says
Good luck finding one. They don’t seem terribly hard to find but can be outrageously expensive. Chad paid $15 (not sure if that was for one or two) and that was a steal.
Suzanne Golden says
I have one, many years ago mom purchased one for each of her kids. Used to use it all the time and loved it.
Nelle Coursey says
I hope he bought it!!
Judy Laquidara says
He did.

I just bought this exact one from a friend last week. $15 just like Chad. They’re $70 to $100 online. Mine has the aluminum roaster liner inside (a flat oval with holes to raise the food a bit). I made Swiss Steak a few days ago. It works great!
Judy Laquidara says
I think mine had that when it was new but it’s long gone now. I only use the big roaster when making bit pots of food – like a bit pot of ribs or gumbo.
