We have two fridges in the garage. Both are fairly old. I think the one we brought from Texas is about 11 years old and the one Jeremy left in the garage is about 15 years old. We call them “The Jeremy Fridge” and “The Texas Fridge” so if one of us is telling the other where something is, we know which fridge we’re talking about.
I know . . no family of two needs three fridges but . . we don’t go to the store very often; we stock up when things are on sale, and we keep a lot of fruit, lettuce, cabbage, etc. in our fridges. OK . . a few Dr. Peppers and maybe there’s a beer or two in there.
The last few times I’ve grabbed a Dr. Pepper out of The Jeremy Fridge, I pour it over ice and it just doesn’t taste right. I was wondering if we had bought an old 12 pack. I never like pouring a warm Dr. Pepper over ice . . they just don’t taste right. I never thought that the fridge wasn’t keeping things cold enough. Today Vince got a bottle of kombucha out of the fridge, poured it in a glass and when I took a drink, I said “This is NOT cold!” I put a thermometer in the fridge and it’s 65 degrees. Not good because there’s deli meat, milk – all kinds of things in there that need to be kept cold.
This time a couple of years ago, I would have been feeling sad that we had to buy a fridge but Lowe’s has one in stock so I’m feeling terribly lucky that the fridge decided to go out when there’s one available. They said they had several but by the time Vince gets there . . they may all be sold. The guy said “It’s so crazy with appliances! If you want it, I’d come pay for it.” Vince has gone to pay for it and get it delivered as soon as they can.
It’s a Frigidaire which the Lowe’s guy said is the only thing they can get right now. I don’t have a preference. Vince asked if I wanted white, stainless or black and I said “Whatever can be delivered the fastest!” I think it will be white.
EDIT: Vince stopped by Home Depot because there was something there he needed. They have an LG that’s bigger and he said looks better (is stainless instead of white but he said it looks “better”) for $40 more than the one at Lowe’s so he got the LG. Apparently Home Depot is not keeping a lot at the stores but they’re in a nearby warehouse where they can deliver them as purchased so we won’t get it til a week from tomorrow. We weren’t going to get the one from Lowe’s til Wednesday or Thursday so what’s a few more days?
My plan had been that when the new fridge for the house arrives, (or should I say IF it arrives?) get rid of The Jeremy Fridge and put the current house fridge in the downstairs garage. In fact, we’re going to put the Lowe’s fridge in the downstairs garage because it’s air conditioned and heated in there. It’s just too hard on fridges when the garage gets as hot as it does. The Texas Fridge had lived in the sewing room where it was air conditioned and heated. I wish we could put the freezers down there too but for now, we can’t.
We definitely do not need four fridges, which is what will happen if we keep the current house fridge but it’s a 2003 model so . . Vince can make that decision. Maybe we’ll be responsible adults and not keep the current house fridge, when the Texas Fridge goes out, get rid of it and have just two fridges.
One thing for sure – if we had 10 fridges, they would all stay full!

Kevin’s correct.

Maybe the shop needs one? When is the kitchen one supposed to come?

They told us December so I’m guessing March or April at the earliest. I don’t think he’ll want a fridge in the shop. The closest door to get to the house is the downstairs garage and we’ll end up with with two fridges in there.

We had a fridge in the garage but in the last couple of years it seemed to struggle so we brought it inside and had a technician come check it out. Apparently it’s running fine but he warned us that we shouldn’t put newer fridges in the garage unless it was heated/cooled because of all the sensors in them. Just as well as I hated going in there in the summer. Then our washer broke so the repairman came out and was able to fix it which delighted me as I love the washer we have and didn’t want to have to go buy a new one. I keep telling my husband we need to go ahead and order a new dishwasher as we’re getting to where we can’t choose all the functions on the main panel. It still washes great but I just know something else will fail sooner or later!

We had one for 10 years in the shop in Texas and it was HOT in there. I figure if a $500 fridge lasts 10 years, that’s not bad. The new one will be in the air conditioned garage since we do know that’s the best place for them but we just never had an air conditioned place where we could keep a second fridge. The one that went out today is at least 15 years old and was not an expensive fridge to start with. Heck . . hot garage or not, I’ll be surprised if we get 10 years out of the new fridge that we’ll keep in the house. Things just aren’t made to last any more.
You’re right and if you wait til the dishwasher goes out, you either have to take what you can get or wait months and months for a new one. Good luck with that decision.

I have two refrigerators on both ends of the country but no freezers. We unplug and open the doors on our refrigerators when we leave either house.

There is just the two of us and we have two refrigerators and one small freezer. THey are all full. We live 8 miles from town so it is nice to have have what I want to cook in them. I was wondering the other day if we had to downsize to senior living homes will they let me bring my two fridges? (even if it was just me?)lol

I know it’s just a convenience and not a necessity but when I open a 24 pack of Dr. Pepper, I want to put them ALL in the fridge and throw out the cardboard container. Same with bottled water, beer . . empty that box/plastic container and get rid of it. Then it’s easy to glance in the fridge and see that we’re low on beer or water or DP and not think there’s still 8 cans in a box only to find that the box is empty and never got tossed.
I cook for a week when I can so having 8 or more containers of veggies and three or four containers of meat dishes takes up a lot of room. We buy eggs from a guy in the next town so we’ll usually buy four or five dozen when we go. I buy three gallons of milk at a time and then we usually buy three more gallons from the dairy.
Of course, none of that is necessary. I could easily stick one DP in the fridge, or buy one gallone of milk at a time . . it’s a luxury to have the extra fridges and, especially, to have the room for them and to have the solar panels providing the power to run them. I’m always thankful for that.

I have 3 freezers and 2 full size fridges, and 2 drink size fridges. And there is only 2 of us. It is nice to have a place to put overflow items in the garage fridge. My freezers are full. I like to drink a beer or two in the evening. I like my beer to be just above freezing. I like that I have a fridge specifically for keeping beer at that ice cold temperature.
I read an article recently about fridges. Apparently there are fridges specifically made to be kept in the garage and then there are fridges specifically made for being in the house under temperature regulated conditions. In the current times, I bet you have to specifically order a fridge meant to be kept in a garage, and it would probably be more expensive.
My garage fridge will freeze milk and eggs in the winter, so I have to be careful what I keep in there during the winter.

We have 2 full size fridges. The one in the kitchen has all the everyday cooking stuff in it and the one in my studio has all my baking supplies (well, what will fit). There’s an upright freezer in the studio (just off the kitchen) and a small chest freezer on the back porch. Everything is full. I think that means I need to clean out and throw some stuff away. Sometimes we put stuff in Chris’s fridge or the one in the other apartment if it’s vacant. There are only 2 os us!
