I’ve encouraged Addie to have some kind of hobby and nothing has ever interested her. It was obvious that she was doing whatever I suggested ONLY because she knew I wanted to do it. She is soon to be 9 years old and she’s never bored. She does like to draw, loves to color, plays with her dolls, loves working on puzzles she I never hear “I have nothing to do” but I wanted to encourage her to at least try the things I love. I always think it’s sad when I hear people say “My grandma did this or that. I wish I had learned from her.” So far, Addie has no interest in any of the needlework crafts I do.
I thought about diamond painting since it’s so popular now. I ordered her this unicorn kit. From the time she opened it til it was finished late last night, that’s ALL she wanted to do. In fact, last night she was determined to finish it. It was getting close to midnight and I said “Addie, you need to go to bed!” She said “Granny, I AM going to finish this tonight!” and she did.
Not only did she want to finish it but she wanted to frame it, and get the next project set up.
The next project is Yoda and it says for “adults”. The diamonds are smaller and there are way more of them. The description does say:
The joy of life: beginner diamond painting easy to use by adults, children, diamond kits for kids can cultivate children’s hands on ability and patience,
We’ll see if she can do it. I told her if it’s too difficult or frustrating, we can put it away til she’s a bit older and we’ll order another one. She’s already talking about the frame she wants for it. The first one came with the frame but this one did not. She wants her dad to make her a frame. I told Nicole and she said “Oh, he probably will. He’ll do anything for her!” How sweet.
I keep thinking I’d enjoy diamond painting too but the last thing I need is another hobby. I was so tempted to work on the unicorn when Addie wasn’t here but I knew (1) she wanted to do it all herself and (2) if I had added one diamond, she would have noticed.
She’s going home tomorrow and our time together is going to be very limited with school and cheerleading on weekends. Once cheerleading is over, I’ll hopefully go back to having her most weekends.

She did a great job on the unicorn. Good for her! Neither of my granddaughters have shown any interest in learning to sew – and neither did either of their moms. But Olivia did go to my quilt guild meeting with me last month and now she thinks “maybe” she might was to learn to sew – someday. LOL

Kind of sad, isn’t it? I love to work in my flower beds, quilt, fish, read. None of my children wanted to garden or quilt. Two out of three do love to fish and read. And thanks to family participation in Boy Scouts of America, my boys do know how to cook, and one loves it.

Bead jewelry could be a next stop. Both my sisters started with beads and now make beautiful silver jewelry. Plus the beads with elastic make great little gifts for friends and relatives. I am blessed with grandchildren twenty minutes from me. Now that they drive we do not see them as often but love to see those cars come in the driveway.

I’ve thought about that. Maybe I’ll get her something like that for Christmas.
