It was in early 2014 that I ordered a Curious George for Addie. Chad had always loved Curious George and I had no idea how Addie would feel about him because when I ordered it, she wasn’t even two yet. She immediately fell head over heels in love with him.
For almost seven years, George has been her constant companion.
They slept together.
They went to the carnival together.
They rode bikes together.
They posed for pictures together.
George couldn’t go to kindergarten with her but he rode in the car on the first day of school to send her off and wish her a great first year of school.
This picture is one of my favorites. The house and huge mesquite tree in Texas with George posed up in the fork watching Addie swing.
Even Speck loves George and watches over him while Addie is at school.
All things change and Addie has outgrown George. The last few times she’s been here, she’s brought him and her stuffed Yoda but she has not slept with them.
Yesterday Addie was getting her stuff together to bring, Nicole came outside almost in tears and said “She just broke my heart!” I thought Nicole was really going to cry. She said she handed George and Yoda to Addie and Addie said “Nahh . . I don’t sleep with them any more.” I guess the look on her mom’s face was too much for Addie so she said “OK. I’ll bring them!”
She put them down on the sofa and did not take them to bed with her last night. My guess is that she’ll always love George but he will no longer be her constant companion. He has been a great first best friend!
I always wondered if I should order a second as a backup just in case he fell apart one night. I didn’t, though George has been mended a few times. I think he’s going to make it through, which is good because I don’t think a replacement would ever have taken his place. I hope they put him up and keep him forever.

-So sweet!
I remember being concerned about the separation when she went to school. Well, that’s been a while, hasn’t it?

Yes, she’ll be in third grade very soon.

Yes they will put George away when Addie is ready for them to do that. And they will never let him go. That is her childhood and we mothers always keep those mementos.

Oh, growing up has it’s sad side, too. I’m glad he lasted as the star in her life so long.

My son had a ‘snoopy’ stuffed dog. He went everywhere with us and I lived in fear he’d get left somewhere – that would have been a major disaster at bedtime. Fast forward 50 years and Snoopy is still around stashed somewhere in his house.

I still have my first “teddy” bear (it was actually a cat) tucked away. He is a stately 59 years old now. He’s missing one eye, and most of the fuzz on his face. His ears look like he was in a cat fight and lost…He started out as a pink gingham cat, but a few years in Mom and Grandma gave him a “makeover” and re-covered him in blue gingham. I’m sure my heirs will take one look, and say “ewwww” and toss him in the trash! LOL

My donald duck is on my dresser in my bedroom and my husband’s little foot is on his dresser on his side. The funny thing is when I am sick, my kids will bring me donald duck to snuggle with. Im usually like thanks but no thanks cause he is no longer soft. My kids don’t really have a lovey. They both loved their binkies and would have multiple on them at time.
