In Louisiana and Texas, we always called it “fill dirt” but here, I noticed they just call it “fill”. Now I know why!
Yesterday they began bringing in the the “fill” for the foundation of Vince’s shop.
I didn’t go out there because I was about to leave to take Addie home. When I got back, we walked out and looked at it.
It’s almost pure rock! I asked Vince . . is that stuff going to be ok? Vince said . . it’s what Josh ordered!
Josh is our guy who cuts and trims trees, and does excavation and other dirt work. We like him a lot. He has one guy he tries to use for all his dirt/rocks. The guy brought us great topsoil but I was not expecting so much rock in this “fill” pile. The truck guy said “It’s what Josh ordered. It’s what we call fill around here.” so we’re not worried. When in MO, do what the rest of the people do . . build your building on rocks! 🙂
Josh will spread it, tamp it down, then bring in what he calls “compaction gravel” and get the foundation the way he wants it. Different lingo here for sure.
We’ve had dry weather for a while. It started raining last night and over the next 24 hours, we could get up to 4.5″ of rain. I was concerned that the dirt would wash away but I doubt that pile of rocks is going anywhere.
For those still trying to get the lay of the land here. Left front are the solar panels. The house – the sun room is on the back where you see the windows on the corner. The door leads from the deck to the sun room. Then the two sets of two windows – that’s the breakfast room. The next room, where you can really see just one window – that’s the main level family room.
Just to the right of the rock pile but going towards the magnolia tree you can barely see – that’s where the garden is located.

We walked by a building site the other day, and they had just added fill to the front area. It was maybe only 10% rocks, and the rest was big chunks of broken up concrete and broken up porcelain from toilets or sinks. I wonder if that was a green way of using up old building site teardowns.

Interesting.

Well, at least it wasn’t bowling balls! You might have heard about the man in Michigan who found 160 bowling balls used as “fill” under his stairs! Talk about unusual fill.

In St. Louis there’s fill and fill dirt. What you need it for determines what type you get.
