Yesterday I found baskets for storing my linen in the sewing room. They weren’t exactly what I wanted but they were there and they weren’t expensive so . . perfect! I wasn’t sure if they were going to be deep enough to hold the 36 and 40 count stashes because I have more of that. They’re not. I’ll need two for the 36 and two for the 40 but what I have now is probably the most I’ll ever have. Stop laughing!
When I got the baskets out last night to start filling them, I expected Boots would decide they were the perfect box for a comfy kitty nap and that’s exactly what he did.
I don’t know if it was on purpose or accidental but he had his back to me and no amount of trying to convince him to turn and face me or the camera worked. When I talked to him, he put his ears back like he was thinking of being a mean kitty.
I moved over to the side of the chair and made enough weird noises that he looked up at me.
Knowing how cats like boxes, I figured he can have it. I took Boots and the basket down, put the quilt back up in the chair, put the basket on top of the quilt and he hopped right back up in the box. I hardly see how that’s terribly comfortable since it’s were and kinda scratchy fabric but, I’m not a cat so what do I know.
I do know I need to run by Tuesday Morning again and get a few more baskets.
The baskets have some exposed wire in the bottom and I didn’t know if that might discolor the linen so I put a towel in them and then folded the towel over the linen in case Boots decides that might be a better basket for sleeping. I don’t have to get into these baskets often – just when I’m starting a new project – so I may come up with a better way to cover them to keep Boots off them. I could always put a bolt of fabric over them but I was wanting it to look pretty. Any ideas??

What about some sort of metal “S” hook or something to put in each handle so you could hang them from the bottom of the shelf above and then still put MORE cross stitch stuff on the shelf below them. Then Boots wouldn’t be able to sit in them.
Denise Russart says
Or (replying to myself because I had a better idea for the hangers which you might have on hand) instead of “S” hooks – how about the binder rings used for floss rings to loop thru handles and then thru wire shelf above (tho you may need to use 2 rings in each handle so they aren’t tippy from side to side?) I may have to try this when I get home. I have the same style baskets and there’s a lot of wasted space between wire selves in my sewing room built in closet shelves so I may be able to hang my baskets there.

You’re right. There is a lot of wasted space between the top of the basket and the botto of my shelf. If I had known I was going to do this, I could have put some of the shelves closer together but not doing that at this point. I like your ideas! I’ll see what works. Thanks!

Love Denise’s idea – that’s creative & a terrific use of space. If that idea doesn’t appeal (although I’m going to remember it so I can use it!), I’d put a REALLY crinkly bit of plastic on the top so that one the cat lands in it he’ll be startled and never return to the basket. Having a cat in your floss basket is a good way to ruin the floss.
Judy Laquidara says
Same thing with yarn. He can ruin a skein of yarn in less time than it takes for me to try to get it away from him. My floss will be stored in the closet. In fact, while Vince isn’t home, I should start moving that down so I can do it without him noticing how much there is.

What about taking some pretty fabric and putting a casing around the edge and make it a cover for the baskets.

I’m not so great at organization, but I just have to say that picture of Boots is about the cutest ever! I just love that cat!

I’ve looked at it all day and kept saying to Vince .. he’s just the prettiest cat ever! He’s an easy cat to love . . coming from someone who is not a fan of cats. I told Vince today that I’ll never get another cat but I’d be really heartbroken if something happened to Boots. I was trying to figure out how old he is . . I need to go back and find the little kitten picture on the blog. He’s probably 9 or 10 years old.
