So far, we’ve ordered a dishwasher, a fridge and a stove. That was in April and they told us 2 – 4 months on the stove, 6 months on the dishwasher and they couldn’t give us a date on the fridge.
We went by there today because we were passing by (to get a milk shake at Babe’s!) and guess which one will be here first! Hint: The one I care the least about — the dishwasher! I wanted to pound my hands on the desk and say “I WANT MY STOVE!!’ but figured that wasn’t a good thing to do. Of course, all these dates are from the manufacturer but the appliance people just shake their head and say “don’t count on it!”. It will be here when it gets here . . nothing we can do about it.
Dishwsher could be here in August. That’s four months after we ordered it.
Stove could be here in October. That’s six months after we ordered it.
Fridge could be here in November. I think even the appliance people were shocked at that date. One lady whispered “January” and the other kinda shook her head in agreement.
The store did seem to have a lot more appliances on the floor than they did the last time we were there. It’s GE Cafe appliances we’re getting and they didn’t have a single GE Cafe anything in stock – not in any color or any configuration. I asked if the white was what was causing our holdup and she said no . . some brands are just harder to get.
At least I don’t have to keep hoping the stove will be here soon. Now I’ll just hope I have it before Christmas.

Ok I am sure you are going to think I am against all of this–I am not–you are so fortunate that you are only WANTING to replace your appliances because you want different ones. How about those people and there are more than you realize that their appliances are failing or have failed and need replacing and it is a NEED vs want. They are having to wait unthinkable amounts of time for their appliances to get there and they are trying to make do with broken or no appliances. I am not trying to make you feel bad or such–but in reality of things, Your appliances are just to make everything look better or get the gas stove you want, when in reality the electric one will cook meals for you–maybe not the way you want, but still works fine.

You’re not exactly right. My fridge has something wrong with it. The repairman has been here once and will be back Tuesday to try something else. My dishwasher has been repaired twice in the last three months. The oven has a loose door and doesn’t heat correctly and heats the kitchen terribly because of the door and to replace the door and hinges would cost way more than it’s worth. The appliances are 18 years old and yes, I could wait until they all completely stop working but we chose to think ahead, knowing these were old and it was taking forever to get them and we ordered them before they went out.
Also, if ours were out, we would go to Lowes or Home Depot, or even the appliance store where we were today and get SOMETHING because something is better than nothing. I haven’t been in a single place that had zero fridges, stoves or dishwashers. They just may not have exactly what someone wants. Freezers may be totally out of stock.
And, for the record, everything looks fine in my kitchen. All of my appliances match. They’re all Kenmore Elite and they’re all 18 years old but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the way they look. They’re just starting to fail. The stove that I have has more features than the stove I’m getting.
I have a feeling our fridge will not make it til the new one arrives. If that happens, we’ll either bring in the garage fridge or just go out there for what we need but I will not begrudge someone who is getting a fridge that they ordered months prior to when I ordered mine, whether they got a new one because their old one was going out or whether they got it because they wanted new bells and whistles.

I hope your GE dishwasher is better than the one we bought last year. Will never buy another one. And no it wasn’t cheap!

It is crazy that almost every single appliance has good and horrible reviews. I think two people can get the exact same prodct and one will have great luck and one will have a lemon. I have several friends who have the same model we’re getting (stove and dishwasher) and they are all happy with it but that certainly doesn’t mean we won’t get a bad one.

4- 6 months for garage doors. Steel shortage.

It’s crazy the things that are in short supply. When I hear something is not available, it sometimes makes sense but most of us have lived our lives with everything we need or want readily available . . until now.

The freezer of my side by side is no longer freezing. I haven’t decided if it’s worth the expense of a repair call. I also haven’t decided what I would want in a new fridge nor how long before I get tired of bringing things up from downstairs deep freezers or that refrigerator! So, I guess I don’t really NEED a new fridge but this sure is inconvenient. And now I make these decisions myself.
Judy Laquidara says
You didn’t ask for my advice but a fridge is something I use all the time – constantly! So I’m going to have one that works and works right. We have two in the garage so if it goes out, I won’t be hurting for a fridge but I want a good, working fridge in my kitchen. There are some things that are just worth it to me. Neither fridge outside have ice makers . . well, they both do but we don’t have water lines in the garage so I’d either have to bring one of those fridges inside or buy ice trays. So . . if it were me, I’d be buying a fridge.

I was one of those who had to order a fridge because the compressor died and smoked up my kitchen. So went to Home Depot and looked to buy one, found one that fit in my small space 1/2 inch wiggle room. Doorway too. Almost 100 year old house. Told me 4 weeks. Called to tell me on my delivery date, that it was not ready and would be another 10 days. Then that day came and was called and told that it missed the delivery truck that day,Friday. So would be the next delivery day, Tues cause Monday was a holiday. I lived 7 weeks out of 2 dorm size fridges. Cooked up a lot of meat that first week so it would not go to waste. If you think your fridge might be going out I would order now and hope the old one last til the new one shows up.
Judy Laquidara says
That’s exactly what we did. The repairman kinda shook his head when he saw that it was 18 years old and hadn’t had any major problems . . like . . your number is probably up so that’s when we ordered it. Now he has to come out again.
We always have a second fridge in the garage for drinks and overflow. We had a fairly new second fridge in Texas (maybe 6 years old so I guess it isn’t so new) and we brought that. The people we bought the house from left a 14 year fridge in the garage and it works fine so IF ours goes out, and I hope it doesn’t, we’ll just move one of those smaller fridges in or keep going out to the garage, though there’s no ice maker hooked up out there but we won’t be without.
Same with stove . . if the stove should go out before the new one gets here, I can live with an Instant pot, hot plate and electric skillet. I don’t want to . . but I can do it.

Last Monday I went to the appliance store, intent on ordering a washing machine. Mine is failing, the computer is finicky, some days it won’t work at all. I have to unplug it and wait, and restart it, I have spent many dollars and hours trying to get it repaired, even had the motherboard replaced. Anyway, I was all ready to wait six to eight weeks for a new one, and they had two in stock, Yay! I have to wait 4 weeks for the pedestal, but the washer is here.
Judy Laquidara says
Nice. Wasn’t that a pleasant surprise?
A lady walked into the appliance store yesterday while we were there. She said she wanted to look at washers. A few minutes later, the salesman came back and asked for a sold sign and soon, she was out the door. WHAT??
They really did have more appliances in stock yesterday than I’ve seen since we’ve been trying to decide about buying new appliances.

I replaced my washer and dryer last summer. I thought the washer was failing (turned out to be something else), but the washer was 20 years old, and fortunately I was able to get a new one within a week. I was able to save up laundry until it arrived, so I didn’t have to visit the laundromat. The dryer took about 6 weeks, but since it wasn’t an issue to begin with I was fine with the wait. Now my refrigerator is my oldest appliance. It is closing in on 20 years, so I’ve been thinking maybe I should replace it just because. I would be in a world of hurt if it went out and I could not replace it for several months.
Judy Laquidara says
You may want to just glance around an appliance store and see what’s in stock. Here, they seem to have a lot of stainless . . maybe not a lot but I’d say there were probably six big, nice, water/ice on the door stainless fridges. I didn’t see any black or white though.
I figure by the time most any appliance gets to be 18 – 20 years, the energy savings alone probably make it worth replacing. We usually replace our central a/c units every 10 to 12 years just so we don’t wait til they go out and then have to wait to get them replaced when it’s so hot and because the newer ones seem to get more energy efficient every year.
It’s hard to replace something that seems to be working perfectly though and I’ve had several fridges that were way newer than this 18 year old fridge and none of them have ever held a candle to this one when it comes to making ice. In fact, we bought extended warranties on all these appliances we bought and we usually do not. Vince asked the salesman if he thought it was worth it and he kinda smirked. He didn’t say it but it was like he wanted to say . . you’ll need them!
