As you may remember, I keep ordering magnifying lamps. Back in the Fall, when I first started cross stitching, my friend, Donna, told me that she had ordered so many lamps trying to get the one that worked perfectly for her. I thought . . how hard can it be? Oh, now I know.
Every single lamp, whether it’s a small table type lamp, a head lamp or a free standing, swinging arm type lamp, that I’ve ordered has advantages and disadvantages. Every lighting device had something I loved and something I didn’t like. I told Vince the other day that I feel like the lamp is still the weak link in my cross stitching. Sheri from The Loopy Ewe posted on Facebook about the lamp she loves. It’s made by Brightech and it’s almost exactly like the Brightech light I already have but it has a rolling base. The one I already have has a very heavy base so it will not tip over, and that’s good but if I put it where I want it, it is’nt easy to get in and out of my chair so I’m thinking the rolling base will work better. I don’t think it will work on the upstairs carpet but it may work on the downstairs carpet.
Yesterday when we were eating with Marlene and her husband, I asked Marlene about her favorite magnifying lamp. That was all it took to get Vince started. He thinks I’m the only crazy person who keeps buying lamps. He said to Marlene’s husband “Oh, yes! How many lamps does your wife have?” Mr. Marlene just put his head in his hands and said something like “You don’t even want to know!” Marlene began describing the lamps she has. I think the only difference in the two of us is that Marlene uses every lamp at the same time. I think she said she has five lamps/lights that she uses when stitching. Vince didn’t admit it but I’m hoping he realizes this is what a lot of us go through. By the time he met me, I pretty much had all my quilting preferences decided and had what I needed .. til the longarm came along.
I’m going to get it all figured out . . some day.

What about those furniture glide pads? They make some large sizes that wouldn’t sink into the carpet. Would it work to stick those on the bottom of your current lamp?

Dazor are the best but $$$

Yes, I just can’t justify spending that much $$ and whatever I find that I love, I’ll want one for downstairs and upstairs. A friend here has two and she let me borrow one and I do like it but even that, there were some things I wasn’t crazy about. The one I used was an older one so I might like the newer ones better.

Oh my, I have been thinking about getting something to magnify my work. I simply don’t know where to start. It has been quite some time since I have done any serious cross stitching but you have inspired me to purchase new kits for Christmas stockings. The chart is so tiny that I am struggling to stitch it. I may need to meet you in Pittsburg for lunch and pick your brain.
Judy Laquidara says
Let’s do it. Any day!

Gina, most charts are too small for my eyes so I scan it in to the computer and save it in pieces. Then I print each piece out as a full page. I use this as my working copy and mark my finished stitches with a highlighter so I don’t have to figure out what I already stitched. I also bought a magnifying lamp like one Judy has so I can see the holes in my fabric.

Mention to Vince that your light would work better if it could roll. My husband loves figuring out those kinds of modifications. I bet Vince would love the challenge (and the bragging rights) of creating a solution for you. Besides, it’s not hard to design a way to add castors to a lamp.
Judy Laquidara says
Yes, Vince can fix/change/retrofit most anything but I like that lamp not rolling because I also use it on hardwood floors.
