My sewing room in Texas had a full piece of pegboard on a wall and I loved it.
That photo was taken not long after the sewing room was completed. The pegboard ended up almost completely full.
Here, I don’t have a wall where I can put a piece of pegboard. Today when I was sewing, I started looking for some pins, that would have been on my pegboard. I got up, and was looking around to see where I could have a piece of peboard put up but there just isn’t a spot. Every square inch of wall is being used. If ever I get all the boxes unpacked and moved out, I will have a bit of space in the middle of the room and I might could pull two of the shelf units away from the wall and put them back to back in the middle of the room but I’m not sure I want to do that. I’m thinking more of putting myself a comfy chair for stitching, a lamp and all the things I need.
Don’t take this the wrong way but . . Vince stays upstairs all the time if he’s not outside working. That means I can’t listen to my music and any time I get up, he says “Where you going?” Any time I get a text, he says “Who was that?” Any time I start to make a phone call, he says “Who you calling?” I need a little time to myself. Really . . I’m glad he’s here; I’m glad we get along so well but . . I wouldn’t mind being able to stitch downstairs and upstairs. I think he would spend more time downstairs if I was downstairs. Probably the biggest reason . . it is so much cooler down there during the summer.
Back to the pegboard . . as I was looking around the room trying to think what I could do, I noticed the way the shelves are made and thought maybe the “pegs” would fit in there. They do!
Six shelf units in there give me a lot of places to hang things! Boots never bothered the stuff hanging in Texas but I can see how it might be a lot more appealing here since he can get on the shelves, behind the stuff hanging, and play with it. I’m hoping to get the fabric stacked up to where he can’t get behind the stuff on the pegs.
We’ll see how much is still on the pegs in the morning.
I do have to buy more pegs. A lot of the ones I had in Texas have little short “prongs” and only the ones with the longer prongs will catch on these shelves but I made a good start towards getting things loaded on there.

Well, aren’t you clever?

Maybe it´s possible to mount the pegboard to the side of the shelving units?

They’re mostly ended to end with no space between them. Just a bit more room in there would make a huge difference but I suppose no matter what size it is, I’d be wanting more.

You just described my husband’s behavior after he retired. About drove me crazy! I made him get a part-time job just so he would have other people to talk to. It’s helped. I’m not sure if it’s because he just isn’t here as much or if he gets enough chatter from other people, but I’ll take it. 🙂

Hi Judy, Your solution may just be my solution. Could you share the size and place that you purchased these particular pegs. Thanks in advance.
Judy Laquidara says
I do not know about the size of the pegs nor where I bought them. I will tell you that I have some that are almost identical but the little prongs are not quite long enough to securely hook under the top of the rail on the shelf. We’ve ordered some so when they arrive early next week (hopefully), I’ll post the info on them if they work.

Thanks!

What about mounting the pegboard to the door? You could get some over door hangers and mount to that so it would not put holes in the door if they are hollow core doors.

I was wondering if you couldn’t put pegboard on the ends of shelves. Or make and easel and put on both sides of easel. Like you have no wall space due to I turned my shelves sides ways two,.

I have 6 shelf units. Four on one side of the room, end to end so that leaves two ends. One end is near the door to the rest of the house and that door barely clears the end so I couldn’t add anything there. The other end is near the door that goes outside and when that door opens, it hits the end of the shelf unit so with pegs on there, if someone opened that door too hard, I could end up with broken glass.
The other two shelves are on the other side of the room, end to end. One end is again a bookshelf and one end is against the loveseat.
There’s just no room but the pegs on the fronts of the shelves are working great. It will be a bit of a pain to gete fabric on and off the shelves but I’m hoping eventually I’ll use enough stuff that I can get rid of one of the shelf units and that will free up wall space for a pegboard.

another idea: would it work to hang a small piece of peg board from hooks on your shelves (Ikea has a system) This would mean when you need access to your fabric you could remove everything in one step.

You don’t have to attach a pegboard to a wall. Here are a couple options for free standing pegboard:

I have had my eye on the rotating one. But, where to put it? I am already pretty crowded in my sewing room.

Like you, I don’t have much walking room in the sewing room now but those are pretty nice.
