I wondered yesterday if Vince was going to work on the smoke alarm. He had worked so hard outside, I knew he was exhausted and I wasn’t going to mention it but I was going to suggest we sleep in the basement if he didn’t get it changed.
He came in from working, took a shower, sat down in his chair and just about the time he dozed off . . the chirping began. He jumped up . . scared him half to death. He went out, got the big ladder, came in, opened it, put a new battery in it, closed it all up, got down and before he had the ladder folded back up, it chirped again.
That’s when he decided one of the new electric smoke alarms was defective so he went and got a new one out of the box (since he’d ordered an extra one and one downstairs has a wiring issue so we had two extra new ones). He put that one, got down, started walking out with the ladder and it chirped again!
He said “Is it the one in Addie’s room?” We were both standing in there, looking up and listening intently when it did it again and we realized it was the carbon monoxide detector on the hall wall . . not even the smoke alarm.
Vince could reach that with my kitchen step stool so he got it down, changed the battery, put it up . . end of the chirping.

Thank heaven that mystery is solved! It’s frustrating when those things happen.

It would be NICE if carbon monoxide detectors had a DIFFERENT chirp sound than smoke detectors!! I have been through this exact same thing, minus the tall ladders. Good for you!

Smart idea! And maybe if we could program the smoke detectors like our ring tones so if one is plaining “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town”, you’d know exactly which one it was! 🙂
I like that idea!

Ruth, I had the same thought. And Judy, I like your idea, too.

This is so funny – the exact same thing happened to my husband and I on Friday. We could not get the chirps to stop. We changed batteries, went to the store to get fresh batteries, turned off the breaker – nothing would stop the chirps. After a couple of frustrating hours, we realized it was the carbon monoxide detectors. It was exasperating, but what a relief to finally figure it out! The only good thing about the entire situation was that it didn’t happen in the middle of the night!
Judy Laquidara says
That is too funny. You’re the third person to tell me the same thing happened to you. Not funny when it’s happening though.
Rebecca says
Are you counting my reply to your earlier smoka alarm posts? Because that sure did happen here!
I like your idea of different “chirp” tones!
Judy Laquidara says
I had several – I don’t remember who all but yes, you were one of them. I had a couple of emails too. Seems like everyone was having trouble with them at the same time. Probably there’s alway someone having to search to see which one is chirping but when someone mentions it, they mention it to and it seems like a lot but, no doubt, it’s always happening somewhere.

Glad they chirping was found and stopped!
