Raise your right hand if you thought I slept the morning away. Raise your left hand if you think I was up early cross stitching all day.
Either would be incorrect! Ughh! The two things I most want to do and neither are happening and it’s after 3:30 p.m. I so need a nap but I also so want to cross stitch. But . . chores had to be done first.
This morning I got up and decided to make a grocery order at Walmart early while it was still quiet. I hadn’t gotten very far into it when Vince came in, asked what I was doing and I told him placing an order for groceries at Walmart.
Over the weekend I saw a post on Facebook for a new to me meat store in Joplin, J-H Cattle Company Meat Store. I had mentioned it to Vince and kinda forgot about it.
As Vince and I were talking about whether he would go to the store or I’d have the groceries delivered, I noticed that chuck roasts were $6.47 per pound at Walmart. That’s a good bit more than I’ve been paying. I know about the supposed hacking of a meat network or something but I’m to the point where I’m really tired of hearing about all the things going on in the word that are causing everything we do to increase in price or possibly result in shortages. Vince suggested we go to the J-H Cattle Company Meat Store. Vince called them to get directions and prices. I figured their prices would be way higher than Walmart so that would be the end of that but no . . their price for Red Angus is $5.50/pound for chuck steak plus they had all their frozen meat half price! I asked the lady if they always have frozen meat and she said sometimes. They raise the cattle and butcher them (or have them butchered) but people were mostly buying steaks and ground beef so they ended up with a lot of roasts to be frozen.
They also have Akaushi beef and I want to try at least the steaks. I was going to get a Pikes Peak roast in the red angus and akaushi to compare, since both were half off, but Vince was saying “We have more than we can fit in the cooler already” so I didn’t get the Akaushi Pikes Peak.
Vince found the prime rib in the frozen meat and he said “Are the prime ribs half price too?” The lady said “THERE’S A PRIME RIB IN THERE??” She didn’t even know and I could tell she really didn’t want to let that one go for half price but . . she did.
We got 55 pounds of roast, including a prime rib roast; 10 pounds of ground beef, 2 filets and 2 strip steaks – all for $255.
The ground beef (80/20) was $2.99 per pound (on sale) but only because while we were in there, another lady came in wanting 10 pounds. They had the ground beef on sale for Memorial Day weekend for $2.99/pound but that sale ended Monday and the lady thought she was going to get it for that price so the owner said ok and then told us we could have it for the same price. Normally, it’s $3.75/pound. The roasts (Prime Rib, Pikes Peak, Sirloin, Sirloin Tip and stew meat came out to average $3.36/pound.
I have ground eat out for tomorrow. We’re going to take half a pound of the J-H Cattle meat and half a pound of the meat from another local farmer and make burgers. I’ll make mini meat loafs with the other halfs of both packages of ground meat on Friday and do a taste test.
We’re still getting a whole cow but it will probably be March before we get that.
It’s so nice being able to buy veggies from the Farmers’ Market, eggs from the guy with his own chickens, milk from the dairy farm and meat from the guys who raise the cows.

I am jealous! You have picked a fabulous spot to live! Do you remember how much you are paying for the cow you are getting next year?
I agree with you about tiring of the news and possible shortages/price increases. Always nice to turn it off for a while just to take a break.
Hope you got a nap and then some cross stitching in!

For the whole cow, we’re paying $1.60 per pound (on the hoof – not sure if that’s the right terminology but $1.60 per pound for whatever the cow weighs when he gets to wherever he’s going while still alive) and then we have to pay for the butchering/packaging/freezing and I’m not sure how much that is.
At the market where we were today, they charge $7 something ($7.40 maybe) per pound (dressed weight) for a hind quarter. Hope that helps.
We don’t even watch TV but I hear it on the radio in the car and see some (any seems to be too much these days) on the internet.
Yes, we’re so happy living here. Vince has said often that we picked a good place to live. It makes me happy when he says that because I felt like I kinda dragged him along here.

Amen sister. I don’t care, at this point, what food costs. I will buy direct. Our CSA is so big I’m steaming greens and freezing them for winter. We have an Alaska fishing family that comes back when their freezers are full. Nothing better than flash frozen King Salmon and Sockeye. I could go on and on.
I’m jealous of your prices though! 🙂

Oh, the fish! I would love to be able to get that but . . slim chance around here. Isn’t it nice to be able to support those hard working folks directly?

I love supporting our local folks who work so much harder than I did as a RN for 38 years!!!!! They deserve a living wage and I’ll pay what they need 🙂
