This morning as we were leaving to go finalize the plans for the building, the lady from the nursery called and said the guys were coming this morning to plant the trees so we hurried up with the building details and came back home. They were here and had them all lined up so we looked at the placement and said “go for it”.
You can somewhat see in the picture how much higher our house sits that the house behind us. We’re about midway down the slope (the land across from the front of our house is higher than we are) and it goes down lower past the house behind us so I don’t see a time ever when water could get to our house but . . crazy things seem to happen these days.
The guys started digging with a shovel and Vince said . . you’re going to hit a LOT of rock. By the time they got to the second hole, they got the little back hoe thing off the trailer and started using that.
There’s a spot where the water kinda drains across our driveway, about halfway to the end of the driveway. That bothers Vince so they’re going to use the little backhoe and work on getting the water to flow away from the driveway.
I think there are 14 trees to be planted and last time I looked, they were on #7 so they’ll be done in no time. It would have taken Vince a long time, a lot of sweat and probably a sore back to get those all planted by hand.

Sometimes it just comes to a point in life where you have to hire things done. Our backs and knees get to the point where they won’t take the abuse we heaped on them in our younger years.

Yes and sometimes the hardest part is accepting that. Vince said he wasn’t going to buy all kinds of tools/equipment here because he wants to just hire things done instead of trying to do everything himself.

What building? I missed something but I’m always excited when Vince and you have adventures.

Me, too!

Definitely worth having them planted!

I’m certainly having friends (?) tell me of so many things that “you can hire people to do that”! How many people do I want to know that I am now the only person living here? There is a lot to taking care of one’s property properly!

That’s true. Before Vince got here, I thought twice about a lot of things that I never thought twice about when Vince was around. I’ve heard about people watching for “patterns” so I tried to be careful about not taking Rita out at the same time every day. As Addie says “Granny! YOU told me this neighborhood is safe!” Honestly, I’m not so sure any neighborhood is truly safe any more so we don’t need to be inviting trouble.

Your comments about all the rocks brought back childhood memories for me. Every year when the garden was plowed my 5 siblings and I were required to pick up the rocks. By the time I was grown we had quite a “rock pile.”
We now live in Arizona and had the nursery plant a dozen Mexican Bird of Paradise shrubs. They came in 3 gallon pots and my husband had first intended to plant them himself. Imagine our surprise when we heard them using a jack hammer to dig the holes. We learned that’s because there is a hard pan layer that’s nearly impossible to get through any other way.
