My grandma used to tell stories about Bonnie and Clyde. They spent some time in Louisiana and I think the residents living in the area where Bonnie and Clyde were frequently rumored to be hanging out lived in fear of them. Can you imagine living in the day when there was no real news, other than getting a newspaper once a week or so and what you heard from others and those stories probably grew more each time they were told?
I knew there was a Bonnie and Clyde connection to Joplin but last night on Joplin News First, there was a video taken recently from inside the garage apartment where Bonnie and Clyde had stayed for a while. They are said to have killed two police officers while living here.
Anyway, here’s a story about them since this all happened 88 years ago yesterday. I found it all interesting since I had grown up hearing my grandma’s stories about them and now learning more about their connection to this area.

Kevin Costner did a movie a few years ago called The Highway Men about Bonnie and Clyde. I think it was on Netflix. Excellent entertaining movie.

I would love to watch that. I’ll have to ask Vince if we have Netflix and if so, get him to get it going for me. Thanks!

Judy, I think there are still bullet holes in a building over in Oronogo where Bonnie & Clyde shot up the place.
Judy Laquidara says
I actually am pretty much in Oronogo. I didn’t know that. There are bullet holes in the apartment in Joplin they showed last night.

I remember when I was about 12, 1974ish, sitting on my Sunday school teachers porch, we were having a party there, and she talked about how when she was a girl and there was a rumor they were headed to her town in Louisiana the whole town would hide in their houses and peek thru the windows to catch a glimpse of them. She talked about how scary it was but thrilling to catch a peek at the same time.

My dad worked at Conoco in Westlake with one of Clyde’s cousins. He had the same last name. He talked about visiting with Clyde when they were kids.
Judy Laquidara says
Really? I wonder if Clyde was a bad kid or what happened that made him do the things he did??

My mom lived out in West Texas as a child. She told us stories about how she and her little brother, John had to walk half a mile down to the road to get the mail. She was about 7 and he was 5. They had heard Bonnie and Clyde were in the area. As they would walk to get the mail, they would hide behind bushes and trees to keep from being seen by Bonnie and Clyde.
