Chad and Nicole had been talking about buying another vehicle for at least a year. Chad had wanted to not have a car note and that’s one of the reasons he’d been taking as much out of town work as he could. They wanted a Jeep Grand Cherokee and he knew the new ones were over $50K but he was determined to work and save in order to get one.
Yesterday they decided NOW was the time or a new vehicle, and after the Chevy dealer aggravated him, they got on their phones and started looking to see what inventory was around for a Grand Cherokee. They found a used one – I think it’s three years old, sold by a dealer they’ve had a relationship with and a good friend of Chad’s had worked for them for several years (but no longer does) and he always had good things to say about them, and it came with a warranty. It fit their budget, was exactly what they’ve been wanting and that’s what they got.
It looks brand new . . inside and outside. I know that the size of the vehicle isn’t a guarantee of safety in an accident but I feel so much better with them driving that vs. the little car and I know it’s so much more comfortable.
Vince has said that he’d love to buy a car that’s about two years old instead of a new one but I’ve always squawked about that. Seeing how much Chad saved and how nice that car is, I told Vince I will no longer oppose at least looking at newer used vehicles when we’re ready to buy.
They’ve made it to Louisiana. I’m sure Addie has read at least one book to my uncle. I don’t know how or why but those two hit it off from day 1. Addie has always loved him and he loves her so much. It’s cute to watch the two of the together. He never had children and I never thought he’d be so attached to a little one but there’s definitely a connection between them. He comes to Branson once a year and Chad, Nicole and Addie go stay there for a few days, then they go see him at Spring Break.
I know they’ll have fun . . Chad will get to fish, Nicole will get to sit and read . . Addie will get to go for rides in my uncle’s old Volkswagon Beetle . . they’ll all have fun!
I’m so happy for them!

We had a Waggoneer first and then later a Cherokee, plus another Jeep. I loved them all. They aren’t the best towing vehicles, but that’s what Nissan trucks are for. LOL

We have only owned a brand new car once in over 50 years. It had problems, and then a major problem just at the end of the warranty. DH had great results choosing a used vehicle, and we usually get one about a year old. Our last van lasted us 14 years, and when it started having serious problems, we picked up another 1 year old car last spring. It had been a loaner for the dealership, low mileage, and a full warranty!

That’s what Chad’s Cruz was and it was not the best vehicle. We’ll see. All of our vehicles were bought new – one is now 20 years old and one is 14 and, we may only drive another 10 or 12 years so the vehicles we have now may be our last. As long as they’re not giving us trouble, we’re happy to keep them.

I have never bought a brand new vehicle. It looses about 1/3 of its value in the first year. I let someone else take that big value hit and then I buy a slightly used vehicle for a great price. I like less than 2 years old, and less than 25,000 miles. I’ve had both great used vehicles and not so great used vehicles. I have also heard of brand new vehicles that were not so great. That’s why there is a lemon law, LOL! We have been married for 43 years and have had around 15 different used vehicles. As long as you get one that is “gently” used, it should last you a very long time for the little bit that you drive it.
Judy Laquidara says
It’s the “unknown” that’s a problem for me and you’re right – we did have a new car that was a lemon and found the lemon law to be a bigger headache than taking a loss and dumping it but that’s one brand you’ll never ever see us buy again.
If we traded cars often, I would be more agreeable to buying used but since one vehicle is now 20 years old and one is 14 years old, both of which we bought new, I don’t worry about the loss so much because of the amount of time we keep them. We’ll see . . we’re not to the point of buying a vehicle yet but it will probably happen eventually or . . maybe not. These vehicles may last us as long as we need to be driving.

Just remember to get a used one that is certified. Makes me think of the movie ‘O’ Brother Where Art Thou?”. That man friend was bonified.lol
