Not really the last day of cold but the last day of the really bad cold. It was supposed to be up to 32 today but I’ll be surprised if it makes it. It’s 26 at 1:30 p.m. and feels like 17 but it’s fairly sunny so things are melting. I hear snow clumps/ice falling outside. I’ve been out with Rita a few times and the wind is cold . . seems colder than yesterday. It was 2 last night and will be 19 tonight. Then the weekend it’s going to be in the low 40s, not terribly sunny but it looks like it will be sunny most of next week.
After all the work to get the trash to the curb, the trash man didn’t come Thursday and so far, hasn’t come today. I’m wishing I had braved the ice lasts week had had my trash at the curb. Looks like I may go 3 weeks without trash pickup.
A reader wrote me and let me know that folks in Nebraska do have central air conditioning so my post yesterday was wrong. It’s been probably 20 years since I spent some time with a friend in Nebraska and they didn’t have it, she told me most people didn’t so either things have changed or just her area didn’t have it. Vince’s brother lives in NY and they don’t have it but I’m sure if I said “people in upstate NY don’t have it”, someone would let me know they do. We’ve visited his brother twice during the summer and both times, it was those usual heat waves and we definitely weren’t used to sleeping without AC. One year we went to Vermont and Vince found a quaint little cabin to rent . . without air conditioning and, I guess because we’re so used to having it, we were missing the a/c.
I’m working on the cross stitch border that I had hoped to finish yesterday. For some reason I didn’t start it til after 7 p.m. Today I’m wanting to make a pie. If I can find the freeze dried sweet potato pie filling, I think I will make a pie. I have a crust in the freezer. I’ll take that out and see if it defrosts . . if not, I’ll just make a new one. Maybe I’ll leave that one in the freezer and make a new one. First, I have to see if I can find a jar of pie filling!
Not much going on here today . . I’ve thought of a nap but I’d love to finish this border.
I did see that Popeye’s has a fish sandwich so I started wanting a fish sandwich. Wendy’s has one too and I think Wendy’s is closer but then I looked at the driveway . . it wouldn’t be easy to get the car out so maybe I’ll be brave and get a fish sandwich next week. I haven’t even had food to go from a restaurant since before Thanksgiving. It’s safe to get food to go, right? I’ll probably talk myself out of it before next week.

Our cabin is in central Idaho. A majority of us do not have AC. We’d be happy to have it about 2 weeks a year and so not worth the expense. That said, the higher end vacation homes here do have it or people wouldn’t rent them in July/August.
Yes, I’m very cautious and I think takeout is fine. Put a plate on the counter before you go. When you get home, open each package, wash your hands, then put your food on your plate.

I’ll think about it since the first time I’d probably go out is Tuesday. I’m about sure I won’t do it though.

I was outside on the ladder today, chopping ice from the roof. We have ice build up and it will leak inside the enclosed porch. I am too old for this crap!! Hopefully we can hire someone to install heating wires this summer so we don’t keep having this problem.
I have cleared the driveway and walks for us and two of the neighbors three times this week. Not too shabby for a septuagenarian! (My husband has copd and isn’t able to exert himself when it’s this cold.)
Be careful, Judy
Judy Laquidara says
You be careful! You won’t catch me on a ladder . . leak or no leak. I’m too chicken! I was thinking I might ought to get a pole and try to make sure there’s no ice buildup at the top of our gutters but figured I’d cross stitch instead.
Helen says
Good thinking, Judy!

I went out yesterday and looked back at the house roof line and there were many large icicles hanging down. I could see me knocked out on the frozen deck by one of those things so I used the hoe and knocked them down. You might want to look up for icicles where you and Rita go out. Are you always taking your cell phone outside with you?
Judy Laquidara says
I do always take my phone with me. The only place we’re going out now is the driveway where I had shoveled a path. I will let all her “droppings” freeze tonight, then shovel them up in the morning and hope the snow on the ground has melted enough tomorrow that we can start using the yard again.

We’ve been eating out regulary through pick-up of food through the whole year and we haven’t caught anything, so I think it’s pretty safe.

I had the flounder sandwich from Popeye’s this week. It was pretty good. I’d order it again.

There are a lot of people here using door dash and whoever else there is around here. I have seen and talked to them when I was going to restaurants for take out.

Having grown up in central NY there was not AC in cars or houses as a norm. After I moved away it became warmer there in the summers, AC became standard in cars and people started installing central AC in there homes where previously window units were used. So definitely AC is a retro fit in many homes. Not sure what the trend is for new construction though.
Judy Laquidara says
Even growing up in southwest Louisiana, some of our cars weren’t air conditioned. The house my parents built in 1959 had central heat but two window units – one in their room and one in the den so my sister and I always had hot rooms but we didn’t know any different. At some point, they added central air . . maybe when I was in high school.

We don’t have air conditioning in our Montana house and have really thought a lot about putting in mini-splits but is it worth the expense for the two weeks a year we might need air conditioning?? We tired to order mini-splits last summer but everywhere was out of stock.
