I did not expect mail today. The Joplin Police had announced that most main roads were clear but side roads were hazardous. We’re on a side road off a side road so I wasn’t even thinking we’d get mail.
This morning when I went to take Rita out, there was a little more ice than there had been yesterday. Yesterday I was able to walk right along the edge of that garage door, then take a step onto the mulch but this morning, I couldn’t quite make it so I went back in, grabbed a big cup, opened a bag of the cheap kitty litter I bought last time I thought we were going to have ice and didn’t . . sprinkled that over the ice and was able to get out to the grass with Rita.
I was sitting stitching and I heard something on the front porch. I got up and it was our sub mail man. He is so nice. He left his Jeep on the road but walked down my slippery driveway. I told him “You could have left that in the mail box!” He lifted his foot and said “I have cleats on with screws in them. I have traction!” I think he was having fun. He said the driveway wasn’t bad but the steps and walkway to the front door were slippery. He said “Don’t you be trying to go down those steps!” I assured him I would not.
I felt like an old granny and the young mail man was watching out for me.

What a sweet substitute mailman! I love being in the older generation, especially when them young whippersnappers are nice!! (just don’t patronize me…that isn’t ok!)

Can you get stair pads that will improve traction or even some heated ones?
I need to do something for my steps, even though we don’t have ice that often, but I am getting older and with a bum knee. So, I am researching options.
And, it seems that some cookies or something will be in the future of that nice mailman!

We probably could but probably won’t. The sidewalk from the driveway to the front door is shaded and stays icy if the steps are icy. I’m going to ask him to just leave packages in front of the garage door if it’s icy. I’m always tracking them and I’ll check there and I can just raise the garage door, grab them and not have to go onto the slippery concrete.
Normally, we just have ice, it melts and a few days later, we have more ice but this time, we’ve had ice Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and will have more tomorrow. It isn’t melting, it’s just stacking up on top of itself. If there are packages coming tomorrow, I’ll throw some kitty litter out there and on the sidewalk.

What a sweet guy! I know a lot of mail carriers have found sick people and have helped a lot of people. We have a lot more of these people around that we think but we need more!

How nice and sweet he was…..

How cute and sweet. Maybe you need boots like that for walking the dog!
