As I was going through boxes yesterday, I came across this Vacation Bible School certificate. I do not remember ever seeing this before.
It cracks me up . . I wasn’t even 2 years old yet and my mother was the “superintendent”. That was my grandma’s little church and we were probably living there then. Mom said she doesn’t remember being the superintendent. That’s not surprising. I was close to being 2 years old and my sister was almost 5 months old and I guess mom was going to college at that time. My sister was born in Missouri and I thought we lived there longer than that but I guess we were back in Louisiana for the summer of 1956.
Makes me wonder what other treasures are hidden in all that stuff down there.

Treasures for sure. THEY refer to my junk and I always correct them. I only have treasures.

I have been running across some of those memories recently – going through things my mother gave me a long time ago and also in things she saved and I packed up to “look at” someday (after she died in 2011). Even though I don’t have actual memories of some of the papers/pictures, I do remember seeing them as I was growing up. Good memories that feel like hugs.

Just found my hospital birth record and was able to compare it to my 3 day old granddaughter’s. She is a pound heavier than I was, weighing a whopping 6 lbs, 15 oz..

As someone who is looking at moving in the not too distant future, what do you do with these treasures? I was raised by parents who grew up in the depression. So I have a hard time throwing stuff away. I’ve been giving my kids all their treasures but what do I do with mine?

Susan, I moved a few years ago and had the same dilemma. I started slapping them in scrapbooks. I am writing what I know about each item. I am hoping that my kids will appreciate the information. My mother wrote a lot of short stories so I have been putting them on the computer so that I can give each a copy. She included much of her life in those stores. I think at some point they might appreciate the information. Today would have been my mothers 95th birthday. I lost her 25 years ago before I knew the questions I wanted answers to, so I am hoping to provide a bit of that for my kids.

What wonderful treasures to find while your mom is still alive. You get to ask her questions and because you have the blog you get to record them. How wonderful.
