I don’t remember having trouble with cedar pollen when we lived here before but once we got to Texas and the cedar trees became full of pollen, I had horrible allergies and had to take meds and Cedar fever drops . . I tried everything and some years one thing worked and the next year, nothing worked.
This week I have sneezed and wheezed and my ears hurt so I called my doctor’s office. They said “It’s cedar pollen! Use Flonase and take Zyrtec.” I was thinking . . there are no cedar trees around us. When I told Vince, he said “There aren’t any cedar trees near us.”
Then I saw a cardinal in the magnolia tree and took a picture.
Before I even found the cardinal . . I saw cedar trees . . right on the edge of our deck. That’s the deck railing there. I thought . . those blasted things are orange and full of pollen.
I found this picture taken a few months back. Notice how much more orange there is in them in the first picture? That’s pollen!
Ughh! I hate that I’m going to have to deal with cedar pollen here for at least January and February. I wish I had known in time to start taking the allergy meds around Thanksgiving. Next year I’ll know. Heck . . with a cat on my lap most of the time, I should probably take the meds all year.

One thing that I know about zyrtec, is that it starts working right away, it can take a bout 2 weeks for others some others. Flonase too is pretty fast. We also get cedar pollen blown in from other states w the weather. Allergies Are me!
Judy Laquidara says
That’s why Zyrtec is my first choice. Hopefully the Flonase and Zyrtec together will help but I wish I had started taking it earlier.
Liz says
Check to see if it is the Eastern red cedar variety. It is very flammable and should not be so near your home.
Judy Laquidara says
They aren’t. You may remember we had a landscape guy out in the beginning to help us decide which trees to thin and we asked about those.
wanda jordan says
We don’t have them here but the pollen blew in from the west with the cold spell. Everybody is having issues with pollen then to top it off Covid. So even if you get rid of them the pollen form others people trees will effect you. So yes get started on allergy meds like 1st of December to be safe.
Judy Laquidara says
With my cat allergies, I’ll probably take them all year now that Boots is in the house and right under my nose all day.
Marie says
Is there any chance you will take those trees out of the picture? I have two grandadults that are allergic to them so we just make sure not to have any close to house. I hate to see people with faces swollen and unable to breathe. And as Larry used to say they are nothing but mosquito and spider catchers.
Nelle Coursey says
I take Zyrtec and a generic version of singular. I take them all the time or I would be sneezing all the time. I do have to admit since I am wearing the mask when I am going to the store, I have not had as many problems as before. Maybe they are helping in that way as well. Also I was told you need to take another one instead of Zyrtec for a month or so and then go back to the Zyrtec or it will not work as well. your body gets used to it.
Judy Laquidara says
Normally, I only take zyrtec during cedar pollen season but that may change with Boots around all day. I can switch off to something else in May or June then go back to zyrtec once it’s dry, dusty and everything is flying around out there.
Sandi B says
My allergist put me on zyrtec probably 15 years ago, when it first came out and was prescription only. I’ve taken it daily since then. I’ve not noticed it not working. But, I have year round allergies, and have been on a daily antihistamine for over 30 years.
Linda Garcia says
I have “hayfever”. What ever that is. Allergies to dust and other common items that makes my nose run constantly. I take Zyrtec daily all year round. Otherwise my nose is a faucet. Drives me crazy.
