Lori Holt is a well known name in the quilting and cross stitching communities so I’m sure you’re all somewhat familiar with her. It’s funny that I’ve never watched her flosstubes. She only has five as of this writing and I’ve never stopped to watch them. Since I almost exclusively used tone on tone fabrics for my quilting, her fabric never really excited me. I loved that they’re happy and bright though. From what I’ve seen of her cross stitching, which is very pretty, it just isn’t my favorite. I like the old Americana colors and the old samplers, which is weird because with quilting fabrics, I loved bright colors and the reproduction fabrics never appealed to me at all.
The other night, Denise sent me a link to one of Lori’s flosstubes to look at a way she was finishing a piece. I was shocked to see that almost everything she was making was exactly the same type patterns I have and want. You know what happened next . . a few patterns were added. I would never have expected to love most of what she showed, based purely on her own designs.
She also has some very creative ways to finish projects. Her flosstubes are some of the most inspiring I’ve watched. I watched the first four of her flosstubes and that gave me some great ideas as far as finishing some of my planned projects.
If you’re a cross stitcher, and haven’t watched her videos, I encourage you to do so. I didn’t pay a lot of attention but I’m sure she has lots of quilting videos too.

Thanks for that tip! I’ve been wondering what exactly the term “flosstube” meant. I’m off to watch!

She must not be selling on Etsy anymore. I messaged her twice on Etsy about some items she had for sale but has not replied.Guess I need to find another source for her items

Betsy, search on Etsy for the Lori Holt items. I’ve purchased her items from other Etsy merchants. I do love her work.

I’ve been wanting to try my hand at counted cross stitch again. I hardly remember anything from 30 years ago and there have been lots of new techniques and supples since the. What are flosstubes? I used DMC embroidery thread before but is there something better? And what about Aida cloth? Walmart sells some; is it good?
Judy Laquidara says
It’s probably a good thing that you don’t remember anything from your former cross stitch years. So much has changed but so much is still the same. There are all kinds of “fancy floss” but DMC is still my standby. The overdyed floss is great or big areas . . like a house or a pond or a big anything. It has just enough variation to make it interesting but I’ve decided to use mostly DMC. The fancy floss isn’t always easy to get. I haven’t used Aida from WM but I’ve only worked on two pieces so far and it was linen. There’s definitely nothing wrong with Aida. I prefer the linen because I can get it that isn’t 100% solid – kinda like Moda Marbles.
Just grab something small, stitch it on Aida and then try something on linen and see what you think.

What do you mean by overdyed?

I also fell down the Lori Holt rabbit hole. Her quilting fabrics remind me of the old 30’s fabrics that were happy and popular years ago. I made three quilts this year from her fabric and book. I also finished a couple of her cross stitch patterns to hang in my sewing room. I like the traditional charts (we used to call them patterns) from companies like Little House Needleworks and Country Cottage Needleworks for the rest of the house. I’m with you – there’s a whole new vocabulary to learn now. I also had to get a magnifier light that I didn’t need 30+ years ago. Guess it’s really true – what goes around comes around.
