I didn’t realize how many gray days without much sun we’ve had til this morning I was sitting at the breakfast table and had to get up and close the blinds because the sun was so bright in my eyes.
Even Boots was taking advantage of the sunshine. He moved around several times to get full advantage of the warm spots.
What it meant for me is that I had to go out and pick up more river birch branches off the ground. My burn pile is way too full but I’m afraid to try to burn them. When we have a sunny day with zero wind and the ground is wet, I may try but I’d rather wait til Vince is here and have him do that. I also could pile them up under the solar panels just to get them in one spot and then when Vince is here, we could start a fire in the fire pit and then keep adding them as they burned down. I just can’t leave them all over the yard because Rita runs into them.

Don’t burn until he gets there. There needs to be two of you doing this. Take care!

It’s a whole lot different burning here than there. With the snow and ice through the winter, the ground stays pretty wet. I wouldn’t do it on a windy day but I don’t think I can put it off til Vince gets here . . not at the rate those river birch trees are dropping twigs.

I remember those gray winter days when I lived in Kansas. To make things worse I worked the night shift and was asleep during the few, very few, hours of occasional sunshine. I’d wake up and honestly had no idea whether it was night or day. There was a TV show called Northern Exposure that aired years later and it explained a lot about what I felt when I lived there. I know it was supposed to be set in Alaska but I swear it resembled those long Kansas winters. The Northern Exposure show had an episode about a guy who was addicted to a grow light attached to his sun visor. It made him feel good. It was an introduction to seasonal affective disorder for me. I started going to a tanning bed salon in the dark of winter and not because I was vain about my skin color but because I felt soooo good when I could feel some sun on my skin. When you ask me to paint an outdoor scene and everything could painted in shades of gray………..well, I’m going to find something I can get close to that is yellow. I need sunshine. Get a grow light…..look on amazon at the aerogardens. They grow herbs in a small space indoors and have a grow light. It is enough light for me to have in the room on gray days and additionally it produces enough herbs for me during the winter. Seriously. Look at it. I harvest basil, thyme, dill, and parsley a couple of times a week. ( I know the Canadians are laughing at me. They have thicker blood, I guess. Give me 100 degree days any day rather than 30 degrees. That’s why I live in south Texas. I’m into sun……….all of the time!)

I’ve had an Aerogarden before. We have a sun room here where we can grow herbs in the winter but I doubt I do it. The gray days don’t bother me. I love winter.
