The other night, my friend, Sarah, and I were having one of our late night messaging sessions. At least five nights a week, we’re either on the phone or messaging . . sometimes for hours . . and I wonder why I don’t get anything done!
We were talking about German chocolate cake and how much we like it and I said . . I have a friend whose mom is German. I’m going to write her and see if her mom has a good recipe. Then Sarah said . . hmm . . I don’t think German chocolate cake is really German! Too late . . I had already sent a message to my friend.
Sarah sent me this . . along with more info so I had to write my friend back and say “Nevermind!”
Then, I said . . next thing you’re going to tell me is that French fries aren’t really French. I did remember hearing that but didn’t remember all the details.
Yep, she googled it and sent me this.
I said . . please don’t tell me there’s no Santa Claus but she said she knew Santa was real so we were both ok on that question.
If someone had told me even 20 years ago that my friend from first grade and I would be discussing German chocolate cake, French fries and Santa Claus at midnight when we were grandmas, I wouldn’t have believed it! But we were . . oh, the things we discuss. We have really covered some interesting topics in the past 50 years. We used to have long conversations on the phone after our dates. It’s good to have a great friend . . just wish we lived closer together.
Here’s a funny story I’ve probably told on here before. Chad was probably 6 or 7 . . it was the year I had the flu and thought I was going to die. Sarah called and I wasn’t very talkative but she talked for a while. I told her my throat was so sore, it hurt to talk but I could listen. No long after we got off the phone, probably after 1 a.m., my doorbell rang and I about had a heart attack. It was Sarah bringing me dill pickles and popsicles. She told me to eat a dill pickle while eating a popsicle. She said it was something about the sour and sweet combination that would help my throat. I can’t even remember if it worked . . just remember her showing up at my door and scaring me half to death.

Funny you brought up this topic. I just heard on the radio that some guy is suing because Hawaiian rolls are not made in Hawaii! What did he think, that they flew them over from the islands! People!!
Judy Laquidara says
I saw that too and didn’t even think about that when doing the blog post.

It’s great you have such a good friend to enjoy talking to. I have a good friend whom I kind of lost touch with when she moved off my street. Her resolution for 2020 was for us to get together “in-person” again, and of course then the “C” word hit. The resolution is now to meet up again in 2021. Just the other day I was thinking we both have phones…it’s not like we couldn’t call each other. Duh! 🙂

Oh, to have my best friend from first grade in my life again! We could read each other’s minds; teachers placed us so we couldn’t see each other in a classroom. We dated (and married) roommates. I hurt her so bad when we were juniors in high school. Treasure what you and Sarah have [I know you both do]; I envy you both! A little late, Happy New Year!!

That is interesting about the pickles and popsicles! I had never heard that. You know my favorite cake is German Chocolate Pound cake. It is nothing like the German Chocolate cake with the frosting! It is so good you don’t even have to have frosting!! But a slice of that warmed with butter is better than any drug you can think of! Or at least I would think it would be, I don’t do drugs!! LOL
Laura Haynes says
Ok, Nelle Coursey, we need that German Pound Cake recipe here for all the Patchworkians.

You know my favorite cake is German Chocolate Pound Cake. It is unlike the regular German Chocolate cake, has no frosting on it at all. I think if I did drugs, I would prefer this cake to them! Warm up a slice and put butter on it and it is to die for!
Judy Laquidara says
Why haven’t you shared that recipe?? Or made the cake for me when I lived there! 🙂

I miss having a friend like that! You are so blessed.
