This morning early when I went out with Rita, I thought it was sleeting but it was snow. Tiny little round pellets of snow and they were falling hard like snow. I think there’s a name for those . . what is it? I googled it and they say “graupel” but that’s not a word I’ve heard before.
Soon, it was big, fat, fluffy snow flakes falling. I was able to eat breakfast watching the snow fall. We got probably an inch.
I love this tree! For some reason, it makes me think of The Grinch tree every time I see it.
I kept sending Vince pictures. He said I was making him cold and what he didn’t say is that he’s thankful to be in Texas. It’s cold there . . for that part of Texas, but about 15 degrees warmer than here.
The snow is so beautiful! I just came in from taking Rita out again. It’s rather hilly here and there are several houses on the next road over and there are children in some of those houses. I can hear kids giggling and laughing way back in those hills and I’m sure there are snowmen and may be a snowball fight going on. It made me want to tromp back there and ask if I can play too!
The snow has mostly stopped. It’s 33 degrees out and will get up to 35 early this afternoon but is supposed to snow a bit more. I think I’ll clean out the fridge and get my trash up to the street. It will probably all freeze overnight and be slippery in the morning.

Vince may be getting snow also in the next day or so according to the local forecast. Won’t that just tickle him!?
Judy Laquidara says
NO! That would not make him happy. At first it was supposed to snow there today and it wasn’t in our forecast and I was moaning and complaining that he might get snow before we do but that’s not how it happened.

DFW environs were scheduled for snow or “some snow flakes” but at last minute, it appears it will be just cold rain and warmer by the wknd. I had a FB memory come up showing a beautiful snowfall in late Dec. 2014 in Wichita Falls and I remarked on the serenity, just about this time of year. Little did I know that just days later that year my husband was hospitalized and passed away midway in Jan. My life was quite wild for a while after that snowfall, so glad I had that moment of peace first and posted it to FB. It”s a good thing the earth is round, so we don’t know what coming next, a line like to borrow from Out of Africa.
Judy Laquidara says
That’s true! If we knew what was ahead, no telling what we would do.

In the 40’s here and cold, yucky rain. We have a flash flood watch here as well. Had plenty of milk and decided that it is a perfect day for rice pudding. Thank goodness for our IP. Hubby will be pleased when he gets home tonight.
Denise Russart says
I call that kind of snow “styrofoam snow” it reminds me of little styrofoam beads. We got about 4″ or a bit more of very fluffy snow overnight.
Judy Laquidara says
That’s exactly what it was like. It was really bugging Rita. We do’t get much snow here so any we get is always fun . . since I get to stay home and don’t have to go out.
patti says
as i read your description, my first thot was graupel. yep, it’s a “thing” and i actually kinda like the look of it. as denise said, “styrofoam snow” – perfect image!
Judy Laquidara says
That must be it but I have a very limited knowledge of snow terms. Didn’t learn much of that in most of the places I’ve lived where we never saw snow. Thanks!

So beautiful

Yesterday it snowed all day here on the western slope of Colorado. There is 6 inches of snow in our yard, and this morning when I got up it was a whopping 9 degrees @ 5:30 am. Right now we are at 23 degrees.
Nelle Coursey says
It is supposed to start snowing here tonight and some more tomorrow. But if I have learned anything in my 71 years of Texas weather, Mother Nature can change her mind in a second!! LOL
Susan Nixon says
It’s nice once in a while – if it isn’t too much. The 4 inches we had from Christmas Eve, that stayed through until starting to melt Saturday, was my enough-for-the-year. If I don’t have to go out in it, I don’t mind, but I don’t like the way the heat pump sounds when it gets way low temperatures.
Arrowhead Gramma says
It is called it graupel, but we have always called it popcorn snow. Sounds more fun! Judy, if you want to build a snowman come to my house, we had 16″ of snow in 18 hours on Monday. That is a lot of snow to deal with, however when the sun came out with the beautiful blue skies it was absolutely gorgeous. Winter is here in my little spot of paradise.
Rebecca says
Could graupel be called “sneet”? (Mixture of sleet and snow)
Judy Laquidara says
I don’t know. It just seems like I remember hearing a word when we lived here before and thinking it was a neat word but heck . . it might have had nothing to do with snow! You know how I am.
Carolyn says
I’ve heard the weather forecasters in the Texas Panhandle call it “sneet” since it like snow and sleet.
Judy Laquidara says
I think that’s the word. Thank you!
