After working just a bit on that 25 count lugana, I knew I needed a light with a larger magnifier. Yesterday morning I checked Amazon, Walmart and JoAnn. JoAnn had this one that had good ratings. Vince would have preferred LED lights but Ott tubes have served me well and it as a 3X magnifier and it was available in Joplin AND they had a 50% off one item so I got it for $99. I bought it and was able to pick it up curbside so that made me happy.
They had three in stock in Joplin when I looked yesterday morning but by late afternoon when I went to share the link with a friend, they were out of stock in Joplin so I feel like I did good!
There’s not really anything that I can say I do well but there are some things where I really . . to use Chad’s word . . I suck! Reading instructions and putting things together . . I just freeze up. I used to do those things but for so long, Vince has done them and I never have to ask. He panics when he thinks I’m fixing to put something together.
I stood there and looked at the pieces and thought about calling the guy we bought the house from. I thought about taking the box to the neighbor and saying HELP and then I thought about just being an adult and doing it.
Bad picture but I got it done and love it.
What a difference that larger magnifier makes! So glad I got the lamp and got it put together.

Why don’t you get yourself a set of readers at the number you need to see stuff ( 125, 150, 200, 250 etc)then don’t have to keep the magnifier thing ? Just wondering. And the Ott light is the best thing I’ve come across. As we get older we need more and more light due to the cataracts starting to build up. Eye doctor told me I would know when I’d had enough and get surgery. And I hate LED lights they never give off enough light to suit me. I have to have 3 times the amount to see the same. Now how does that save power and they don’t last longer like they say either. Another price gouge. Like 3 hours to wash dishes in dishwasher now. How does that save anything?

You need to shop with Vince. He replaced all the kitchen lights in this house with LED lights and every time the former owners come over, they shield their eyes because the lights are so bright. The lights in our kitchen in Texas have been in there for nine years! We put them in when we moved in because we wanted brighter lights. Every bulb that goes out around here – inside or outside, Vince replaces them with LED.
Three hours to wash dishes? I love the “one hour” feature on mine and use it every time I have dishes that look fairly clean.

Our 2 year old dishwasher for a “normal” cycle is 123 minutes. And, the dishes are not dry at the end of that. I have to open the door and leave it vented for several hours.
I have several of the OttLites. A couple of years ago, I started replacing the lights in the sewing rooms with the Slimline 2 and 3 lights (from the Daylight company). They are pricey, but I really like them.

The dishwasher in this house doesn’t do a great job of drying dishes. The former owner told me that the repairman told them to turn the hot water on at the kitchen faucet and let it run a second when you start the dishwasher and that would help. I told Vince and he shook his head in disbelief. I’ve tried it a few times and I think it might help but I don’t remember often enough to say for sure, though I don’t see how it would possibly help.
When we first bought the MO house, Home Depot had some kind of amazing sale on some kind of LED bulbs and we bought about 50 of them. He changed out the kitchen/breakfast room, then the family room, and before he left, he changed out the sewing room lights. I need to get an electrician to add a few more lights where I think my sewing machines are going to be.

Congratulations!!! I had a similar Ott light (still have the magnifier). I went to move it last year and the base of the lamp completely disintegrated (sand/concrete like pieces and plastic EVERYWHERE). If it had still been under warranty they would have completely replaced it. Sadly, my replacement lamp doesn’t have the type of post to anchor the old magnifier on it.
Judy Laquidara says
If you still have your magnifier, Vince bought some lamps that are very similar to Ott lamps on Amazon for way less. They have the round pole that my magnifier would fit on. I’m wondering if I could order the same or similar magnifiers to put on those. I do have some older Ott lamps that have poles shaped more like a 2 x 4 (flat) so the magnifier would not fit on those.

I do have the magnifier – It is SO good for older eyes and I love the flexible hose like piece that is on the end that hooks on to the pole and goes to the magnifier. Will have to check out the lights on Amazon. Thanks.

Please be careful with the magnifier since your chair seems to be close to a window. My mother had a magnifier for cross stitch set up in her semi-daylight basement. The sun came in just right one day, hit the magnifier which was above her mounted cross stitch project and burned a hole in the cross stitch. I would suggest covering the magnifier with tea towel or piece of fabric when not in use.
Judy Laquidara says
Yes! I read the manual and it says to keep it away from sun so when I’m not using it, I drop it down and put it under the arm cover of the slip cover. I’ll have to ask Vince to make sure that’s safe enough but I could see that causing an issue. That window gets morning sun and it is partially blocked by the “L” on the house but it is a bit of a concern.

I have that same lamp but without the magnifier. It had belonged to my parents, and it’s one of the things I thought looked super helpful. I have it sitting behind the sofa (where I sit) with the lamp hanging over the sofa. I can swing it to the side if I don’t need it. I turn it on every time I sit down there!
Judy Laquidara says
That magnifier just clamps onto the pole so if you ever want a mangnifier, you might could buy one.

so i wonder have you tried the Craft Optics glasses that Bonnie Hunter loves? They are pricey but i can see them working for what you need. I myself am tempted but…the price sets me back. It is easier to do 100.00 for a lamp.
Judy Laquidara says
I have no interest in those. The lamp and magnifier seem to be working for now.

I just got my new Ottlite in last week. Hubby broke the light bulb while installing it ? so made him go buy the new bulb.

That is the newer version of the light/magnifier I use. I love it (them…I have two, one for my bedroom and one for my basement craft space but my husband has co-opted that last one for this jigsaw puzzles)

I knit a hat (regular beanie type pattern) to cover my magnifier when not in use! Has worked fine and looks great
